The Army Painter Speedpaint Mega Set 1.0, 24 x 18ml Acrylic Paints incl. mixing balls & 1 brush - Contrast Miniature Paint for D&D & Warhammer Miniatures

I’ve been painting fantasy minis since the 80s and wow has the hobby evolved over the years! …and along come the “speed paints”. I want to get my one complaint out of the way and that is color selection (well, two complaints. As someone else mentioned…yeah, be ready to receive them with a bottle busted open). I would love to see twice as many colors available. The first thing I did when I got the paints was to download pics of what each looks like on a mini. It’s a bit hard to tell what you’ll end up with until you’ve grown accustomed to them. But I’m finding that mixing the paints puts me back in the dark as the resulting color on my palette is hard to decipher until I’ve applied it to the mini. Maybe there are sample photos of say, 50:50 “Palid Bone”:”Purple Alchemy”? Hmmmm, Might have to create my own reference chart with various Speed Paint colors mixed 50:50? 🤔 Anyway! After watching some videos I started as many suggested; white primer or even zenithal priming. First, I didn’t like what I was getting with plain white primer. Not enough going on. I liked zenithal better but these paints don’t convert black primer to any given shade of color so (though more stunning), the minis were coming out just too dark. Then the breakthrough! Slapchop. This is a method where you prime the mini in black, then (with some force) dry brush the whole thing with grey and then (more delicately and selectively) dry brush in white. After the grey dry brushing your mini should MOSTLY be grey. Let the black primer stay in the very deepest recesses and you won’t have the issue I had with zenithal priming I mentioned earlier. Dry brush the white on the whole mini but sticking to the outer most areas instead (don’t apply with as much force as you did the grey). Check out videos on YouTube. Then…1:1 color and medium! Don’t use these at 100%. I find them to be too saturated. Wow! Now I’m getting the results I was hoping for! The mini I show pictured took about 10 minutes to paint. In one weekend I painted two expansions to God Tear (board game). These paints and the “Slapchop” technique work WONDERS! Again, don’t forget to use a 1:1 ratio (a bottle of the medium comes with the set). I can easily paint up 5-8 minis that look pretty darn good and spend only about an hour to do them instead of spending hours to do just one! And right now I’m seeing them at half price! $50?? I’m getting another set! EDIT: I see they have released the 2.0 version of the paints, doubling the available colors (and even adding metallics). So yeah, I’d go straight for that if you can afford it (roughly $140….can’t seem to find it on Amazon, however?). Otherwise, this is still a great set to get started with!

I think this was a great set. A starter set no doubt. But you can do a lot with it. I've picked up a number of extra paints from nearby nerd-shops, but this is largely what I use for my minis. I just finished a review for a whole set of 125 minis I painted and by and large, speedpaint was what I used. I do wish I had better brushed but whatever. Everything I needed for my minature painting. All of the highlights popped and all the darks sunk into the nooks and crannies. Great for shading little figurines.

Good quality at a good price

Cons. The paints reactivate with other paint, sometimes water, and look darker on a pallette than they do on a model. Pros. Cheaper than most. Really good colors. Varnish seems to stop reactivation. They kind of work for wet blending (ima noob so don't trust my opinion). Still am doing more testing. I think the issue is calling them speed paints. They are cool paints though. These are speed paints and other paints rather caked on in thick layers to bootleg resin models. You maybe able to see where the washes picked up the speedpaints or where my failed attempts at highlighting are. All and all for a noob my stuff looks cool thanks to the paints

Great paint set! I was new to speed painting and these fit the bill!

I held of on speed paints for the longest time. I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger. These get minis to the table and they still look great. There is a learning curve, but nothing a few youtube videos and a weekend of practice can't overcome. If you're a long time painter who is on the fence...just get them. They will make your life easier and change the way you paint.

Like any paint, Speedpaints take a bit to get used to as you learn its properties for yourself. They wet blend well and give the advertised coverage quickly. They cut down the time for my painting of various monstrosities considerably. In terms of tips for a new user. 1) Where they work great as a base coat in most cases, I would still do a dry brush or highlight pass over many of them. 2) Use your normal paints for everything other than your base coat(s). 3) You will want to seal your mini after your speedpaint coat though, as water will re-activate the paint, causing a mess. 4) You should also be aware that the speedpaints are fairly translucent, so your undercoat (primer) matters a lot. If you use zenithal priming, you will probably want to switch out the black for a medium or even light tone, as the speedpaint won't really be visible on black.

These are NOT base paints. You cannot rely on these to cover a surface. However, they ARE great washes that bring out details instantly! A fantastic product, but you will need to basecoat your model first. They're also great for mixing with acrylics. I've mixed them with a little bit of matte white acrylic and that makes them pop really well. These are fantastic for bringing out details on miniature models. They've worked very well for my Warlord Games Black Sails model ships and I'm looking forward to testing them out on Warhammer 40K Tyranids! 10/10 would recommend. Just keep in mind, these are WASHES, not base paints. I recommend a basecoat of off-white, grey, or tan before you go ahead and apply these.

Ich hab mir die Army Painter Speedpaints geholt, da ein Freund sie mir empfohlen hat. Ich male sonst immer mit Citadel Farben und wollte die SlapChop Technik austesten. Diese Speedpaints sind noch die Version 1.0, bedeutet, dass sich diese schnell wieder reaktivieren lassen. Wenn man das weiß, kann man damit umgehen. Es braucht ein bisschen Übung, die Farbverläufe gut hinzubekommen aber ist auch nicht all zu kompliziert. Die Auswahl an Farben gefällt mir und gerade in Kombination mit Citadel Farben,kann man damit eine Menge machen. Gerade die Kombination mit Citadel Metallic-Farben und den Speedpaints ist unglaublich gut und ergibt tolle Endresultate. Von mir eine klare Empfehlung auch wenn ich mir beim nächsten Kauf die 2.0 Version holen werde.

Holy cow this comes with a lot of paints. The packaging is average at best, it comes in these thin plastic boxes which were all broken on arrival with the bottles all over the box turning it into a bulging mess. Luckily none were damaged. Packaging aside it’s a fantastic range for my needs. Which is quick slap chop models for fortnightly dungeons and dragons games. Almost over kill in range but the sort of collection you dreamed about as a kid.

The paint works well so far with a try of 5 different colors. However, the packaging needs improvement as the bottles were scattered inside the box. Worst is one bottle has spillage, almost half a bottle gone inside and some of the bottle labels were stained with the spill.
