Yes , you can melting small, quantity . Good material, I was melting Cooper.

Q: Is this suitable for a coal/charcoal forge?

Temperature wise it should be fine. Also I know that sometimes carbon is introduced to the smelting process in some cases so I do not believe there would be a reaction to the carbon contact on the outside of the crucible from the charcoal. It would be a good idea to not put a completely cold cup into the forge. Let it heat up some to prevent thermal shock. The walls of the crucible are thick so let it heat up at least for a few minutes before surrounding the cup with charcoal and applying forced air.

Q: do you have to season first?

I don't think so . I used mine straight out of the box and it did just fine
