An air pump is not necessary, no. **Q: How does the filter work? It currently just pushes air out of the nozzle & the water just circles on the surface. Debris is not even falling** A: Water is pulled through the intake in the back right corner. Particles are trapped by the filter cartridge floss. The carbon in the cartridge removes discolorations and odors from the water while the foam bio media provides a permanent spot for nitrifying bacteria to grow and mature since it rests in a highly oxygenated area. Once the water passes through the media it comes back out the outlet on the back left hand corner. **Q: My elbow connector split and I need to replace it.
