Very Accurate BP Monitor
This is a very special Blood Pressure Monitor, a home version of the brand used in many hospitals including my own. I am 82 and have found it challenging to find one that is accurate. I have purchased and tested many brands (including Omron and A&D models) and finally found this model. I am currently using the dash diet in a hybridized approach to controlling my BP from a lifestyle/medication approach. So in order for this to work for me I must be able to accurately test my PB, and this does it very well. It contains the same sensors as the professional hospital models and uses the same on-inflation technology. The on-inflation does several things, 1 it only inflates enough to get an accurate reding and then stops, 2 it is much less impactful on the taking of the reading making it more accurate, and 3 it is faster. Of course non of the above negates the importance of taking pains to make sure you stop and settle down and proper cuff placement etc., hence the negative reviews. After implementing the above diet and being able to accurately assess the results, I have been able to reduce one of my medications and ancillary lose about 10 lbs of weight. And my BP is still coming down, with the goal of reducing another medication. All to the credit of being able to accurately assess my changes thanks to this monitor.

Professional grade cuff
great! This is the same BP machine used in my clinic, works great, is professional grade and accurate. Well worth the price if you need to monitor your BP daily. It's easy to use, and saves your readings to the app on bluetooth device.

QA is not what it could be
Purchased the Welch Allyn Home 1700 Series Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor with Easy Bluetooth Smartphone Connectivity, Item model number: H-BP100SBP, from the Welch Allyn Home store on Amazon. I received it today. I put the batteries in, and connected the standard cuff that was included with it. I heard the click when I attached the cuff to the monitor. The monitor turned on fine. I can hear the motor attempting to inflate the cuff. However, the cuff does not inflate. At all. I had also purchased the XL and X-small cuff from WA Home, so I attached both of those cuffs as well and attempted to inflate them using the monitor. Neither of them were inflated by this monitor either. Regardless of the cuff used, the monitor attempts to inflate, then gives the E-01 message, every time. I've tried the cuffs on both the right and left arms, on both myself, and my husband. The E01- (cuff is not secure, readjust the cuff, relax for a moment, then measure again) message is the only result I can obtain. I take numerous blood pressures daily in a clinical setting as part of the function of my employment. I'm quite familiar with the proper way to take a blood pressure reading. This is not user error. Welch Allyn has been used in a clinical setting for... ages. It's a trusted brand. My concern is... what is going on with their QA? I've contacted their Tech Support, and will update this regarding the response of WA's support staff. **** Update **** I called their tech support line at 1-800-856-4605. Dude was super nice, and no questions asked is shipping a replacement unit out. I've been emailed a fedex label to ship the defective unit back at no cost to me. This took this review from 1 star, up to 3 stars. I will update this review again once I receive the replacement unit. **** Update 8/18/2020 **** Received the replacement unit just now. Put the batteries in, powered it up. It's in even worse shape than the original unit shipped to me. That one at least made noises like it was trying to inflate the cuff, and the monitor itself stayed powered on. The new unit? It powers up, shows a 0, then immediately powers off. I changed the batteries out. Changed the cuff out. Bottom line, this was a waste of 2 weeks of my time, and over a hundred bucks, especially since I ordered the x-small and x-large welch allyn cuffs to go with it. I only purchased this instead of omron because I figured Welch Allyn has been in the business so long, they'd HAVE to have it together, right? Clearly. Not. I'll go order an Omron right now, while I call tech support to get yet another return sticker. **** Update to my update **** K, I'll contact Amazon. WA support only handles warranty/replacement, they do not do refunds. Refunds have to go thru Amazon. Now you know.

Good basic machine
I took this machine to my doctor and had the nurse check it for me. It was pretty accurate, about 4 or 5 points off, but the nurse said it was accurate enough for what I needed. The nurse helped me to put the cuff on properly and instructed me on how to use the machine to get good readings. I like the compact size of the machine, the four required batteries add weight. It appears well-made and there is nothing about it to suggest it will not be durable, except for how the tubing connects, which I explain later. The machine has Bluetooth and can work with your mobile phone. When I got home, I loaded the phone app and paired the device. It paired without any issues and reflected the readings on the machine accurately. However, this software only allows memory for one person, so if you are going to be sharing it within the household you will have to keep a written log to manage your results. The phone app is rather rudimentary. It requires registration, setting up a password and answering a few questions and can be set up in a matter of minutes. Instructions are included and easy to read. I cannot however give this machine a 5 as it does not come with an AC adapter. You can buy one to fit, but it will set you back close to $20. Otherwise, It does come with batteries, that you will have to install, but that is no biggie. The other thing that I did not like and caused me to downgrade it a bit, is the fact that the rubber tubing is permanently attached to the machine. Most blood pressure machines come with detachable tubing that can be swapped out. The higher end version of this machine does have that function, but it is not sold on Amazon. So if your cuff and tubing get damaged you are going to have to figure out a solution as I did not see any way of replacing either one. In fact, I was a hair's breath away from returning it, which I might still do, but I want to give it a few more days of use, to be fair. Quite obviously, a corner was cut here to bring down the price, but it gives it a cheaper feel and if you cannot find a way to repair it, you will have to dump it in the trash. This is not good. I don't understand how so as basic as tubing is not designed, so it can be replaced. For that reason, I would not buy it again. I will update, after a bit more use. But for now somewhere between a 3.5 and a 4.

As described
I had high blood pressure secondary to sleep apnea and was told that with the correct amount of sleep and the help of an APAP machine that it may correct itself. Well, it did and my bp ended up crashing. My cardiologist wants me to monitor my pressure at home and he recommended this unit as it's similar to the one he has in his office. I have no real issues with the product. I ended up buying the AC power adapter as well, but have not had to use it yet, as the batteries with original purchase are still going strong. I like the fact that it has blue tooth adaptability. The app is very user friendly and it sends results quickly to the app. The unit is different than other bp units i've had. Other models I have had, slowly release pressure while it reads, this one seems to read as it applies pressure and once it hits max pressure, displays the reading and releases pressure. No squeezing and then holding your arm hostage. I took it to my drs office with me and it was relatively close to the reading the assistant received taking my bp manually in each arm. I'm happy with that. The only real down side i've found to this unit is that i can't seem to save multiple users, where my old one had user 1 and user 2 storage. Pros: Quick bp reading Bluetooth functionality As painless as possible Cons: haven't found a way to track multiple users yet

Monitor is better quality than others, cuff is great using one-handed, don't need quick release
I chose this one over all the others after a lot of searching and reading. No home BP monitor is flawless. They are all somewhat inaccurate. But the electronic portion of this was better than the rest. Cuff is easier to use on yourself one-handed because of the loop design. Cuff material is sort of like a lightweight inexpensive raincoat but the large layer of Velcro beefs it up. I could live with an unpopular cuff. Welch Allyn is highly regarded in hospitals. Having received it, inspected it and practiced with it this is a well-made device. I am happy with this choice. THE INSTRUCTION BOOKLET DESCRIBES HOW TO SWAP OUT DIFFERENT CUFFS. Apparently a lot of people do not read instructions. It is not rocket science, you just carefully pull the tube away from the connection at the cuff. The tube slides on and off a barb. From pages 29-30 of the booklet: 1. To remove a connected cuff, gently pull the air tube connector away from the cuff connector. 2. To attach a cuff, gently press the cuff connector into the air tube. The 1700 comes with a standard cuff and tube attached. The optional cuffs come with a tube which has a quick release connector on the end of the tube. You only swap out the cuffs and continue to use the permanently attached tube from the 1700. The optional cuffs with the quick release will work because you don't use the tube they come with. For whatever reason W.A. eliminated the need for a quick release attachment. Earlier 1700's did have the quick release so the optional cuffs have a quick release in order to work for both, (my guess). (BTW I do not plan to use the app so I have nothing to say about it or the Bluetooth experience).

Welch Allyn is no longer supporting the app for Android, don't know about iOS
I bought this unit because I used to be a truck driver and had to impress the DOT with my low blood pressure every two years. I got this unit so I could monitor my BP at home and have an idea of how things were going leading up to my DOT physicals. Fast forward four years, I'm no longer driving trucks, and I'm not as young as I used to be. My blood pressure is creeping up, so on doctor's advice, I want to monitor it daily and use the app to keep a record in my phone of my readings. Well, I went to update the Welch Allyn app in my Android phone today and got a "Could not update" error. So I uninstalled the app. When I went to reinstall, I find it no longer available on the Google Play Store. It seems that Welch Allyn has inexplicably decided to not support the app for Android any longer, and from reading reviews, it seems this problem began about three years ago. That's ridiculous and unacceptable. The BP monitor itself has always worked perfectly and still does. It's disappointing that the manufacturer would suddenly flip the bird to all the buyers of this model and stop supporting the app. I guess if I want to keep using this BP monitor I will have to record the results on pencil and paper, or a notes app in my phone. That makes it not nearly so easy to send the results to my doctor. Something like this is pretty ridiculous in this day and age. I like this BP monitor for its small size and ease of use, but I'm going to shop around and see what else is available, with an app that actually works. Very surprising to me that a trusted, known brand like Welch Allyn would do something like this. Disappointed to say the least.

A study in product design excellence, as well as accuracy
After reading scads of reviews for BP machines on Amazon, I finally decided to order the Welch Allyn unit. I'm familiar with run-of-the-mill BP machines, having tried several of them for my aging dad. Most of them are poorly made junk. This one is in a class of its own. Unfortunately it is all too easy to crank out a low-cost BP machine, so naturally the market is crowded with pretenders. Most of the units I have encountered are variations on the same theme. They could well all be made in the same Gulag in China and just labeled with different brands. This unit is a thing of beauty. It is solidly built, with a quick-disconnect coupling between the cuff and the main unit. The main panel has a clear, simple display with a single button to take a reading. Once the initial bluetooth setup is complete, you don the cuff, turn on the app, and hit the button. The unit takes a reading, updates the app with the latest reading, and turns itself off. The firmware that runs this unit is pretty sweet. As another reviewer pointed out, the motor doesn't just spin up to full blast while inflating the cuff; instead, it spins up and down, carefully listening and feeling its way along. Readings are very very repeatable. I have seen some interesting variations in the way it takes readings, so there is obviously more subtlety than your average BP machine. It appears to have been engineered by a team that understands not only product design, but the art of taking blood pressure as well. That latter aspect is what makes it a worthwhile purchase. The iPhone app itself is very clean, intuitive and usable. It has a charting function that shows you trends over days, weeks, months. years. Yes, it is priced a little higher than the average BP unit, but it is worth every penny. I recommend this unit highly.
