Core Servlets and Javaserver Pages: Core Technologies, Vol. 1 (2nd Edition) Review: Excellent book - the target reader was just... me! - I love it when I find a book targeted to a reader with exactly my background: I am an experienced programmer overall, with significant Java experience on the desktop but limited server-side programming knowledge and basic HTML experience. The book is well written, the examples are usually clear and to the point. I can't wait to get my hands on vol. 2 when it becomes available. Review: Great Read - Not a book for beginning programmers, however if you have minimal java experience and are proficient in other languages you will be able to figure it out. This book is an excellent read but has little reference value because it has no index. It is very informative if you are looking for something that explains the in's and out's and why's of .jsp and servlets, but if you are looking for lessons and sample code, you will have better luck looking for it online. But then again if you have experience, you can figure out the code yourself -not that difficult. P.S. There is a wealth of hints and code at java.sun.com That site coupled with this book was enough to get me on my way.

A valuable addition to your library
This book (and Vol. 2) are rock solid introductions to Servlets and JSP. They are not perfect (mostly through sins of omission); but they keep you on your feet. These are NOT for newcomers to Java. They explain enough that most of the code examples run without any alterations or fiddling.

Good book
Very good book for java servlet newbies. I could get tomcat to work with simple java servlets within couple of days of reading this book. Highly recommended if you are new to servlets, JSP and server side programming with Java.

A good reference book
This is a good reference book for people who need to work on both servlet and JSP. But, it covers too many topics, which I believe JSP should be separated into another book.

A good book
I like the book as a novice to this tehnology. It covers the things that I needed to know but there are lots of refferences to the volume 2 which in my opinion could have been integrated into this book easily if the author had removed the java code that he put in volume one. Basicaly, I prefer to have code snippets about the API or concepts that are being discussed and not 5 pages of code (which, by the way are also available on the Internet). But the grand picture IMHO is that the author has done a good job with this and the volume 2 books.

Great Servlet Programming guide
If you're learning web servlet programming this is a great book. I've found it hard to put down. The examples are great and the explanations are too.
