The original language and spelling tool
For youngsters just starting to learn the language and spelling, this is the "original" electronic tutor.

Great vintage fun
This is great for your kids if they’re at that early primary stage and learning to spell. Functionally, it does what I remember from childhood. There’s the normal spelling tasks and a hangman game, and probably other tasks that I never got round to trying out (because my youngest kept playing with it!) Not sure if this has the same build as the original from the 80’s, but it does feel a bit on the light and flimsy side. It’s also not been updated in terms of power supply, so you’ll need batteries for it rather than charging an internal battery. The only real complaint I have is that it’s sometimes hard to make out what words the device is speaking. The voice is very much in the style of the original - think the robots from Buck Rogers - and can sometimes blend into background sounds. Oh, and sometimes it feels like you see the same words cropping up repeatedly , especially in Hangman mode. It could really do with some updates, both to the hardware, and the software, but that said, it’s still great value, and the kids love it.

Old school
Its okay, but it has an American accent which make it difficult to spell certain words. Its light in weight and screen quality is old school. Works well but there are better spelling games you could buy for the price.

We gave to my 6 years old daughter and she enjoys play/ learn with it. For her sometimes the words are to fast or confusing but in general she loves it.

YESS 😂 The Toy That Raised an Entire Generation I bought the Speak & Spell 80s Retro Edition and immediately felt like I needed permission from my parents to use it. The second it powered on, I was transported back to a time when cartoons were only on Saturday mornings, TVs weighed as much as a small car, and learning to spell felt like a high-stakes game show hosted by a robot with zero mercy. That voice. You know the one. Flat. Metallic. Emotionless. It doesn’t praise you. It doesn’t comfort you. It simply announces whether you are correct or a disappointment. This thing taught spelling the same way the 80s taught everything: loudly and without apologies. The buttons are big, clicky, and gloriously plastic. Every press sounds like confidence. Or defeat. There is no in-between. You can practically hear a cassette rewinding in the background while it judges your vowel choices. And let’s talk about the experience: You sit there, staring at it, fully confident. You spell the word. It pauses. Your soul leaves your body. Kids today will think it’s a fun toy. Adults will realize autocorrect has been saving them for decades. Final thoughts: This isn’t just a toy—it’s a neon-colored time machine back to leg warmers, synth music, and being humbled by electronics that ran on pure attitude. If you survived the 80s, this will feel like home. If you didn’t, welcome to the training. 10/10. Still smarter than me. Still louder than necessary. Still perfect.

Was searching Speak & Spell since long. When I was a child I used play and learn with speak n spell and speak n math's. Not getting speak n math's but at last got the spell one. Can see my kids loving it. A simple gadget for kids to learn in this modern era. Simple and nostalgic

I just had this delivered today- it came with the batteries installed but I couldn't turn it on. I did some googling and came across the tip about the reset button in the back- that did the trick and it seems to be working great. Kids love the "code" function and hangman. They plan on playing a spy game with the codes. Both my 6 year old and my 9 year old can use it for spelling as well- as there are 4 levels of words. They also love that it is the toy from "E.T." Compared to the original- it is definitely lighter, and the letters seem to be bigger on the display. I personally love that unlike most of their electronics- they are not connected to wifi. Update- haven’t used this much over the past while but now not all the keys work. Only keys located in centre or the device are working. Disappointed.
