I’ve been looking for a large capacity external drive and the new G drive ticks the boxes. It’s mains powered and quicker read/write speeds make it more appealing than the cheaper WD my book etc. So far this drive has been great (initial back ups in first week). It’s quiet and took about 8 minutes to copy 80gb. It’s far quicker than other external drives I’ve had before but obviously not as quick as an SSD. Time will tell how it holds up

This hard drive is most likely fine for storing footage for back up or time capsule etc - but if you want a large capacity drive for editing film projects, do not buy this drive.It falls asleep whilst you're using it in the editing software and constantly has to wake itself up, it makes a god awful crunching / grating sound when in operation, and it disconnects itself completely at random, the cable is secure and the surface solid - no movement... just disconnects itself.Its worth paying a little extra to avoid the hassle this thing brings for video editing.

This disk has a auto on and off feature, which at best was turning off after some undefined time. But now it turns off after a minute or so, and is turning on, turning off constantly. It is also quite noisy. I have had to buy an alternative drive now. The old versions of these with a proper on and off switch were more reliable.

Bought 2 of these last year to go with my 2024 Mac and regret it. Slow to access, very very slow to start up, very noisy. Also the Thunderbolt connection isn't really Thunderbolt, it’s USB-C.

I was pleased that the item arrived a day ahead of schedule - luckily I was able to be at the address at the right time.My only issue with the product is that at first I could not get it to be recognised by either my MacBook or my PC, and had to do quite a fair amount of research to find the solution, which involved downloading material from the Western Digital website. I think the item should come with a booklet that instructs you how to set it up properly, and it should be made more clear in the listing that it will not work out of the box with PCs unless reformatted to ExFat.

This HD failed on me in under a year. Look elsewhere this is garbage.

A real downgrade from the last G-Drive model I used from Sandisk. Maybe I missed an option - but it doesn't charge your mac anymore. However that is the leasst of my issues. The first one I bought to back up other footage and it broke within weeks - barely used it. Second time round it is so bloody slow - editing on premier is a nightmare, it takes forever.Would not reccommed

I have several other smaller G-drives which I like but this one is so loud that it is extremely distracting if you plan to use it as a back up disk on a computer that you are working at. I checked online to see if there was potentially something wrong with it but see a number of other complaints about the loudness. I would avoid if you want to use this as general back up disc running in the background, only if you can place it in another room. I have had to stop serial backups, the noise is so loud and irritating and would never have purchased it had I known.
