Could a child that can't read yet still play this game without much help?

There is a little bit of reading in the game, but all quests also have markers in the world map so maybe reading is not completely important. As long as they follow the markers they should still be able to complete quests. When it comes to main quests you do have to be able to read where to go. The quests are about one paragraph or about half a paragraph of reading. It may be a little rough without being able to read them.
