Quality, size, abilities, best all round compact I have seen. Congrats Sony on an absolute cracker for the money.
An excellent Camera, petite, compact, but having a huge volume of abilities. It will not do what an SLR does but it is a tenth of the size and a fraction of the cost and bulk. You wish a very a very compact camera to take high def shots at a moments notice? then this is the one for you. I bought it for my wife for her Christmas. She has a very capable smartphone and tablet but is a traditionalist and so likes to take her pics with a camera. The pictures this provides are much clearer, concise and easier to take than on her Samsung smart phone and Tablet, far more clarity than on her old Nikon camera and it is the easiest to use that I have seen.I would highly recommend this.

Nice little camera
Very pleased with this little pocket camera. Does everything I want it to do, perfect photos. Haven't checked out the more 'technical' side of operating as I only use it for photos.

ok but there are more to desire
bought to replace my old (but still working) 3.5Mpixel camera. Overall it is good but I was expecting more from a camera of these specs. compared to my 3.5Mpixel camera, the pictures are "better" but only marginally. What I see as the main problem of the camera is that although there more than enough pixels, the image that is captured has very low details. The CCD is capturing a huge area and the subjects are disappearing in it. So, when you try to zoom a bit the image to see the people inside it, they are all grainy with very little detail. The small LCD on the back is misleading on what you get as a result. The second issue is that trying things around, you realise that it is best to use it in AUTO mode. (unless you have so much time to change the settings every time through many clicks). when used in AUTO mode the camera uses center metering and focusing and usually picks a very shallow F-stop (usually F2.8) and the pictures lack depth. only the main subject is focused and everything else is blurred. one hack, i was using is to always zoom a bit to bring the subject closer. On the very positive side, the battery lasts for many hours, usually charged once per day and last for the whole day. on the negative side, I cannot find any firmware updates that could possibly fix all these issues. not bad camera, but not very excited from the result. When the pictures are viewed in small screen that is fine, but if you see them in today's big screens (like 27 inch PC screen) then you are a bit disappointed.

Bought this for my 7 yr old daughter
Bought this camera for my 7 yr old daughter. It has an easy mode so nothing complicated, click and go. It is also small and light enough for her petite hands. I will add that this camera would not be up to being dropped or bashed nor would I expect it to be but my daughter is well capable of minding it. After having purchased 2 cameras designed for children one of which just gave up and the second had to be returned because it was not fit for purpose especially for the price it cost. Hope this helps someone if purchasing for a child who minds their things and like me are fed up with the camera quality of child friendly options, so what if they can bounce, what’s the point if they don’t take nice pictures and the screens are of poor quality. Camera shaped plastic at a premium in my opinion.

Disappointed
I was really pleased with this camera when I received it and have used, however at the beginning of this year when I went to use it it didn't work. I took it to a local camera shop where they tested the battery and said that was the problem. I bought a new battery and the camera worked a couple of times then nothing. I am now waiting until the shops are open again to try and sort out the problem. Very disappointed as I had my Nikon about 15 years and it was well travelled and well used. Will be going for another Nikon if I cannot get this fixed.

Great Camera for just the Basics (or even for kids).
Bought for young son (5) to get him into photography after trying a really basic camera (at half the price) for my daughter which was useless. He's had some really good shots from this, despite taking the amount of care and time you'd expect of a 5 year old. Great build - and despite my purpose for buying this is not really a kids camera BTW, it's just "entry level". Works great for any age where you don't want to manually over-ride or be too creative. I knew the sensor and build would be good as I am a very keen photographer and use a Sony which is further up the range.

but also suffers from some of the shortcomings of this price point - can be easy to confuse the autofocus and not much subtlety
Competent for an entry-level compact camera, but also suffers from some of the shortcomings of this price point - can be easy to confuse the autofocus and not much subtlety in the zoom adjustment, but still rather better than many others I've tried. An odd let down is the weakness of the clip for battery/card cover - it easily comes open. A bit of gaffer tape keeps it place, but shouldn't be necessary.

EXCELENT CAMERA the Sony DSCW800
I have bought this camera to replace my old Kodak. I am very impressed with the image sharpness and colour. It is very easy to use.To upload to my PC the best way is to remove the card and insert it into the computer. Downside: none, although it would have been nice if it came with a case. The delivery was lightning fast! and very well packed. I considered the Nikon, but uses replaceable batteries, also considered the Canon, but poor reviews regarding the quality of the lens. very happy with my choice thank you!
