Dell Inspiron 5000 13.3 Inch FHD 2-in-1 Convertible TouchScreen Laptop - (Silver) (Intel i5-7200U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Windows 10)

After years of owning Apple products (and plenty of Windows PCs, too), I finally decided enough was enough. Despite their continued manufacturing excellence, Apple finally made me look again at switching to Windows as my everyday computer. The latest MacBook Pro prices are ridiculous, their desktop line is woeful (the ancient specs of the Mac mini is just insulting at this point) and their stubborn refusal to join the convertible market means always having a separate device whenever you want to use a tablet.After lots of research, I settled on this Dell Inspiron 5000. My requirements were an i5 Kaby Lake processor, 8 GB of RAM and an SSD – all of which this has. I also like the idea of a convertible, simply for those times when you want to flip the screen around into tent mode and watch a YouTube video or Netflix. For under £600, both the specification and build quality of this machine is excellent – yes, it's plastic, but it looks good and there is no creaking or bending anywhere.More importantly, it's upgradable. I popped an extra 8 GB in for now and, in future, I have the option of expanding the SSD if I want. The battery is also removable, so if that ever fails and a replacement is available, the life of the device could be extended even more.The 1080p IPS screen is excellent; glossy and reflective, of course, but also vibrant and sharp in real-world usage. The keyboard has good travel, decent spacing and is backlit. There's no USB-C, but at least there are real, usable ports in 2017. The whole package looks sleek, is relatively light and, being a convertible, is really versatile. One thing: remove the bloatware that comes pre-installed immediately, especially McAfee, and stick to Windows Defender instead.This machine is fast, adaptable, sleek and upgradable. After boosting the memory to 16 GB, an equivalent 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro would set me back an extra £1000 – and that’s with a similar processor, a lousy keyboard and without a touchscreen or convertible functionality. What's not to like?

Initially great - good value, decent spec, etc. Worked really well for 3 months then it wouldn't boot up one day for no apparent reason. Solid state hard drive failed - lost all family holiday photos and a bunch of work files.Amazon gave full refund with no issue but I will not get another Dell in the future.Yes, could have happened to any other make but I lost a lot of precious files and it is not something I'll forget in a hurry.

Need something to replace an ageing HP laptop for general use but I wasn't looking to spend a lot of money. After much deliberation decided on this. It arrived on time and was well packed. I've been using it for a few days now and I have to say I quite like it. The touch screen is responsive and works well with a stylus (I use these:  The Friendly Swede Replaceable Tip Hybrid Stylus (3 Pack), Red, Black and Silver ). The keyboard seems to be solid as well and with the backlight it feels kind of "MacBook-y"! Battery life seems to be very generous, although I haven't given a serious test, but with normal use of word / excel / internet etc. you should get a day's use out of it. The overall build quality is good for the price and the 360 rotating screen is firm even when moving it, which doesn't bother me and actually makes sense - after all, you wouldn't want it flopping about every time you move the machine, would you? Basically if you're looking for a budget laptop for low-to-medium use that runs all the usual software you could want then this should be a serious contender.

Like New wearhouse deal. Charger wouldn’t work however Dell sent me a new one. Laptop starts up fast although facial unlocking can be hit and miss depending on lighting conditions. 3.0 USB ports are quick as well as the SSD. I imagine a newer 8 gen processor would have been a better suit for this type of laptop. Touch screen varies between over sensitive to having to touch the screen twice to get a response. This is the same for the touchpad. Keyboard is nicely laid out and screen size is perfect for my Excel spreadsheets, internet browsing and Football Manager gaming. Battery is like new and lasts an impressive amount of time and laptop is fairly light. 4 stars as the laptop is good, just not perfect.

Good product, given the price/quality ratio. The screen and video facilities are not the best if compared with similar range products, but the materials are overall good. Had an initial issue with overheating but solved by configuration and new Windows release.The Amazon service and pricing has been excellent!

Beautfu to type on, screen lovely and bright and very clear, very light and feels solid, but ...So far very unstable. The computer has locked up several times and needs a hard reset. Then happens again a few minutes later. All in one day so I'm hoping the problem doesn't return after trying to run all updates etc.Also the network connection so far has been rubbish. It doesn't want to attach to my home network and consistently shows two bars less than any other computer or wireless device in the house. It keeps losing the connection. I am looking at returning the computer but unfortunately I bought it in England and live in Portugual, so ... I guess we'll find out what DELL customer service is like.

The Dell Inspiron is replacing an old laptop that was a similar spec - i5 processor and 8Gb RAM although witha HDD. The Inspiron is so much quicker, booting up in seconds, compared to 10 minutes for the old machine. I'm using Excel on large tables with vlookups and pivot tables and it flies through it.Backlit keyboard is great and can be switched off if necessary. Not tested battery life yet but always take claimed figures with a pinch of salt anyway.Needed to update to new version of Windows so it took a few hours to get the machine set up, leaving it to run and coming back to it.Screen is very clear and the touchscreen nicely responsive.
