Leaves knives razor-sharp.
I've used many different types of knife-sharpeners over the years including steels, rotating metal discs and whetstones. This is the most effective sharpener I've ever used. The two grades of sharpener, one for completely blunt blades and the other to put an edge on a blade, really work. The edge it puts on a blade is razor-sharp, and seems to last. One test of blade sharpness is to try slicing a soft tomato and this is achieved that with ease, needing very little pressure on the knife.I wish I'd found this knife-sharpener years ago.

Excellent value, excellent product!!
Having used a steel for the last few years I wanted something more efficient that took less effort but didn't cost the earth. I read the Amazon reviews on several and decided that this one looked like a good buy.I was not disappointed. After sharpening the carving knife and all my kitchen knives I was delighted - it really does do 'what it says on the tin' - my knives now cut beautifully again after 4 pulls through the coarse side and a couple through the ceramic side. Once I realised that you don't need to use any force when sharpening it was plain sailing. I even sharpened my gardeners knife, which was blunt as anything, and it cuts like new again.I would highly recommend this Sharpener - just remember that you've sharpened the knives and be extra careful washing up!!!!

One of the best around for the price
I bought this to help me sharpen a bushcraft knife and a folding knife I own, as I wasn't getting the hang of using a wet-stone. The good thing about this knife sharpener is that is very easy to use....and it works well. The groove nearest the handle is for getting an edge on a knife (if it's fairly blunt to start with). Take it easy here, as over use will make your blade edge brittle. 4-5 strokes will do it. Then the 2nd groove (furthest from the handle) contains ceramic sharpeners, and this is how you will fine tune your blade to get a razor sharp edge. I just add a tiny bit of water to the groove for the best effect (rinse in warm soapy water and dry after). There are probably better sharpeners out there, but not at this price.

Not very effective on hard stainless steel knives
It's just not very effective for hard steel knives. I bought this to replace an old cast iron, Robert Welch designed sprung sharpener whose mechanism had rusted and broken. I wish I had bought a replacement mechanism for that now. This sharpener just isn't as effective on hard stainless steel knives. It might work fine with softer carbon steel blades. Oh well. You live and learn.

A comparison with stones and 1 stage systems
Ease: The main selling point of this product is the ease of use. It takes like a minute to finish sharpening (just pull it through a few times) and it doesn't require much skill. In comparison when I used stones, I spent like an hour on a knife. I know some people can do it in like 20 minutes, but as a beginner I needed that time as I was learning. With this device you hardly have to know anything.Sharpness: Nothing is going to get you a knife as sharp as what you would get with a few stones, and around 20 minutes of hard work + some skill. However that's hard and the stones cost more. Personally as a beginner, I got better results with this product. Knifes sharpened with this product do feel razor sharp. I could cut through paper, but I did have to use sawing motion. For most kitchens this should be more than good enough.1. stage systems: There are some one stage products out there. Basically they only include the carbide steel blade. The problem with that is the carbide steel blade takes of so much metal in one go, you can actually see the difference. If you always use that sharpener only, you will probably soon over sharpen. (eg the whole blade disappears) Besides, I can't see any reason why not just buy this product which includes the same tool plus some extra.I have not used any other 2 stage system to compare it to.

excellent kitchen tool
Have been buying sharpeners and sharpening steels for ages with limited success so I approach these with a degree of trepidation. . I have a ceramic steel for honing but have been using a wet stone to get an edge and while this works well it is a bit inconvenient when you are in the middle of prep. But this one works well with all my knives. I ran several old Sabatier knives through this and was very surprised how good the edges were in a very short space of time - and how much metal dust there was when I had finished. My Global knives have faired better giving almost razor edges with little debris so, so far so good. It is attractive has a good rubber base which makes it feel secure and it has a very good hand grip keeping thumbs well out of the way! LIked it so much bought another one for my daughter!

... positive reviews I had hoped this would be a good product. I don't know if I was unlucky ...
After reading all the positive reviews I had hoped this would be a good product. I don't know if I was unlucky and received a faulty one, but it is useless - knives are less sharp after using the sharpener. I tried it with a couple of my Sabatier knives, which are a fairly hard stainless steel, and on some carbon steel knives (which are a softer steel, and easier to sharpen). Results on both types were disappointing. I am sending it back to Amazon, and I have ordered a similar sharpener made by Sabatier, which costs a few pounds more, in the hope that the Sabatier one will be much better .

Amazing gadget
I've been looking for a non electric knife sharpener for a while that actually sharpens knives rather than says it does and then you spend the money and discover after the third of fourth attempt that you've wasted your money. So buying this was based entirely on other peoples reviews and blind hope. I am really pleased, I mean really really pleased. One slightly damaged cleaver arrived in the post, it had a ding in the blade and rather than send it back I decided to see if this gadget could sort it out. Three pulls on the grinder and I had perfection. Two on the ceramic and I had a honed and really perfect blade. Worth every penny, worth buying, don't look anywhere else and don't waste money on the designer sharpeners, this is the real thing.
