Could this be used for an external gate?

I've had mine on an external door/gate for 5 years and still looking good and working well so yes, no problems

Why is the handle so small? Is it difficult to turn and open the door?

No, it's really simple and very good quality. The handle appear small but it's good size. Perfect size.

Does a self closing fire door mechanism have the power to over come this lock - aka close it?

I would hesitate to answer that but I would beware of purchase. The lock has a shiny finish but the internals are cheap and nasty. Mine refused to close I reset a very cheap looking spring system it worked a few times only. Thrown out!
