One of my favorite movies
Ever since this movie came out, it has been one of my favorites. I watch it once a year or so, and enjoy it each time. This is an action/suspense movie with spy elements as well. The balance between action and suspense scenes is just right and the interaction between the father (Gene Hackman) and son (Matt Dillon) is very entertaining along the way - the son finds out the father isn't such an old fuddy-duddy after all!The movie does start out pretty slowly, but the beginning does a good job of introducing the main characters and sets up the tense yet humorous relationship between father and son.The plot of the movie is very good except that the ending, while being exciting and suspenseful, is a bit contrived (a little suspension of disbelief is needed here). The acting, with the exception of a couple minor characters, is also top-notch. The characters are believable and seem natural. Finally, I'd just like to mention that this movie has a couple of great car chases that are a blast to watch, and seem plausible, unlike some movies where the chase scenes are totally unrealistic. Plus the fact that they are in Europe, with European vehicles makes them feel different than the standard fare. The DVD itself has no special features, but the price is right. The video and audio quality are good (typical 80's movie quality), and are better than my laserdisc copy and much better than my old VHS copy. However, they did leave in the film change markers; so you have been warned if that bothers you.

What parent won't love this film!
Most kids rebel in their teens and view their parents as ordinary. This is the classic humdrum dad that turns out to be extraordinary. True Lies and Taken are fun versions of this with plenty of action and special effects. I enjoy them all, but Target is my favorite. It has a gritty realism that the others lack. It is also the rescue of the mother rather than the child. It also shows the deep underlying love between parents that kids often don't understand when they observe their parents. The film is a bit dated with its slower start, but the twists of the plot are solid. This is a classic rescue film and doesn't need hints of rape and torture that more recent films seem to need.

piste francophone présente
très bon film en dvd et en plus en widescreen. Surpise en visonnant le film car il y a une piste francophone sur le dvd alors que la jaquette ne le mentionne pas.

Jumping the generation gap
If you are at all self-conscious about appearing to be a frumpy, irrelevant anachronism to your clueless teenage or slightly older offspring, you will get no small satisfaction out of the change in perception that occurs in this film. It also allows for the > 45 yr old viewer to indulge in an odd nostalgia as you are reimmersed in the international tensions and intrigues of the Cold War from what is now a bygone era. And it is a very decent suspense/action film that would only disappoint one looking for the fun, campiness, and hypertech of a James Bond Cold war adventure. It will come as no surprise for most movie buffs that Gene Hackman is perfect for yet another role. A young Matt Dillon and the rest of the crew pull their weight as well.
