Smaller, no worse
This is essentially a smaller, pocket-sized version of Mears's Inspirational Guide to Bushcraft. Not a bad thing, not entirely good either. When I bought the larger book, I was impressed by the quality and quantity of the pictures and the amount of information contained in it. I was, however, disappointed that the book's sheer size made it impossible to cart around in the wilderness where one to want to practise some of the techniques it describes. This is the book I wich I had bought instead. Lots of fairly useless information for most of us - how to skin an elk, that kind of thing. But also some really good stuff - how to build good fires, carve things, build shelter from naturally occurring materials etc. As far as I am aware, Ray really doesn't have any competition in the mainstream. He is famous for his relatability and excellence in popularising bushcraft. The book reads like he talks, as opposed to being ghost-written and then signed by the star. As such, it is entertaining and inspiring while being educational too. If you plan on exploring the wilds - take this book with you.

Good beginners guide
A good book, although, I feel it could have gone into greater details in places. There is a great deal of information on the equipment that one might choose, but not that much actual bushcraft. However, I suppose that if they had made the book too thick, then it would not be very portable. The information that does include is sound and valuable; I just wish there was more of it.

Ray Mears- the best.
I sometimes rate people by how much use they'd be if you were marooned on a deserted island with them. Well I'd have Ray with me any time if I wanted to stay alive. This book informs, encourages and above all else offers a feeling of security in that if you have it with you, you stand a chance in the great outdoors. I watch him on TV and have a few of his books. They're clearly and concisely written and don't patronise you if you're a survival dummy. Essential reading.

One of the best.
Seen on telly Ray is one of those pioneers that does what he talks about, Not just for telly but for his own enjoyment and in some cases even his own safety when there are very large dangerous carnivores roaming about. Even if you are not the outdoor adventurer type, This is a great read and could motivate you to become one.

Ray wrote a great book here for beginners and seasoned vets. The thing I like best about it is that he covers. standard and different ways to approach the different topics of the book. A lot of these I was unaware of, and I can't wait to get out and try them. The book is a little dated in some of the gear he recommends, but that doesn't mean that it is not useful. I like the recommendations he has for boots. He talks about the jungle environment and makes the point that the Military Jungle boots that were used largely in Vietnam are a great boot for using in wet/dry climates. (Got to pick up a pair of the Military's) I have a pair of Blackhawks but I remember the U.S. issue were tough boots. Just one of the many different points I picked up. This is a great book to have in your library.

I've read this book like an adventure novel: simple and clear style, full of detailed photos, written by one of the real worldwide expert of wildlife. Page by Page you can really improve your skills and learn the philosophy of bushcraft. If you want to follow the Wild, i suggest this book. Its dimensions are perfect for backpack, take it with you!

Klare Empfehlung.
