Size really doesn't matter
[UPDATE 3 June 2015. I bought this item in October 2014. It is installed outside where it has been exposed to all types of weather. I am pleased to say it is still working perfectly after 9 months.] I bought this to replace a 140 LED IR Floodlight which had cost £30 and failed after a week. I have to say that I am both surprised and impressed. My surprise was at how small it is; somewhere between the size of a golf ball and a tennis ball. I was impressed by how bright it is and how wide the the light spreads for such a small device. As with most low cost IR lamps, you can see a faint red glow from the LEDs in the dark. Now some people may need a more powerful or focussed beam in order to illuminate something 30m away. If that is your requirement then look elsewhere. However, if you are trying to illuminate an area up to about 10-15m then this is an excellent buy. I think the 20m quoted in the description is a bit ambitious. I am using mine with a CCTV camera. Although the camera already has IR LEDs built in, I needed some extra light to get a better picture and this little marvel really does the trick and for less that £10. It seems just as bright as the 140 LED device I had used previously and it looks much better up on the house wall. For this price, I can buy another two of these for the same money as the old unreliable 140 LED floodlight and get a much brighter and wider light spread but I don't think I will need to. One seems to be enough and it has the added bonus of helping to draw the spiders away from building a web across the camera. The cable is about 45cm long so you will struggle to get a usable length once you have passed it through a house wall so I used a junction box on the outside of the house. You will have to provide your own power supply. I am using a 12V, 1A power supply but I guess anything above 0.5A (500mA) will be ok, provided it is 12V. I measured the power consumption at 4.5W. This corresponds to a current of 0.375A (375mA). So I would recommend a 12V power supply rated at minimum of 0.4A (400mA). The end connector is a barrel type and seems to be pretty much standard for all of these 12V devices but I don't know whether it is 2.1 or 2.5mm. It also uses a centre positive configuration which also seems to be 'standard' these days. As other reviewers have said, there may be an issue with the seal where the wire enters the body of the device. I couldn't see any evidence of this but to be on the safe side I enclosed the entry point with self amalgamating tape as I didn't have any sealant to hand. It is early days but I am very pleased with this light. Hopefully it will last much longer than my old IR floodlight but if there are any problems I will update this review.

Great for watching the hedgehogs
Works well hardly see the red red glow unless you are with two feet.Extends the night vision on the camera and gives me a great view of the wildlife

Utter dogsh*t
The unit worked for less than 4 months in relative dry weather protected to a certain extent from the elements (not covered) before starting to flash on and off constantly; driving my cameras mad as the area goes from light to dark all night... granted it produces IR light whilst it works but I've either got a faulty unit or more likely water has got inside and destroyed it. Unless you intend to protect from all rain (and possibly sunlight) don't waste your money...

Great value, needs some minor modification.
As others have mentioned on here, these are pretty cheap for what they do and a little simple modification is needed to ensure longevity. Following the advice of another reviewer I unscrewed these lamps before installation and put a small bead of outdoor transparent silicone sealant around the thread and also around the cable entry hole at the back. They now seem to be completely watertight and have not given me any issues in the few months they have been up in some pretty horrendous weather. I have two of these side-by-side under one of my cameras and I would say the beam angle is around 70 degrees. The IR brightness compared to the inbuilt IR LEDs is significantly greater and they look almost like IR spotlights. The attached pictures may give you an idea of performance. In the "Cam3" picture you can clearly see the brightness of these lights that are situated underneath another camera on the other side of the house. It would be better if the transmission of light was more evenly spread across the beam rather than an obvious central bright spot that quickly fades. I think if you want very good coverage then you would need several of these angled appropriately for your own application. The case gets somewhat warm under usage but this doesn't seem to affect them in any adverse way. I would be slightly more concerned if this was for an indoor application if they were near something that might be sensitive to heat. Outside does not seem to be an issue. The cables are long enough to go through a standard-thickness cavity wall with some to spare either side for positioning and for connection to the power supply (which must be purchased separately).

It Works!
This was purchased to cover a maximum distance of 10m where there is no other illumination at night. Easy to fit and works fine on a 500mA power supply. Metal body and generous length of cable. It is 850nm wavelength and should work with most home cctv cameras. There are no instructions supplied, but it is straightforward to setup. Connect up the wiring and test it in the dark to get the optimum position before permanently fixing it in final position. Get someone to walk around in the illuminated area to ensure images are clear. Also check for IR reflections from windows. Note that the infrared function will only turn on after the light level falls below the trigger threshold for a while. Cupping your hand over the lens for 30 seconds will not cause it switch on, so be patient and wait until it is dark.

Check your camera for an IR CUT FILTER
A nice bright light. Mine is bouncing off the side of a white van so it is really illuminating the area. Does exactly what it's supposed to do. WARNING: Be aware that if you have an IR cut filter on your camera and you are wishing to turn off the camera LED's (because its behind a window or because its attracting bugs to the lens) then you will need to research IR CUT FILTER on your model of camera. A lot of newer cameras will slide a IR cut filter in front of the sensor when you configure the built in camera IR LED's to be off, this allows proper daylight colours - in daylight. It also stops the camera from seeing the lovely IR light from your new external 48 LED lamp at night!

This is a perfect illuminator for a camera! I use it outside to see who is at the door when its dark. The distance from door to cam/LED is about 2 meters (6 feet), and since it lights up very well I guess it can be used in wider distances, maybe 5 - 10 meters (15 - 30 feet). The only disadvantage (barely worth mentioned) is that you have to remove the bracket to be able to screw it into a wall or similar. (The mounting hole is not possible to reach with a screwdriver because the lamp is an obstacle in all positions when mounted to the bracket). Summary: a good buy for the purposes it ment to be used for, and well worth the money.

In sintesi acquisto valido.
