Little House on the Prairie: Season 1 [DVD]

I used to watch this in my very early teens before I grew out of it and quickly denied having any knowledge of it. Having younger brothers and sisters it was inevitably playing in the background. I purchased this box set for a trip down memory lane and it was unexpectedly powerful, right from the theme music in the opening scenes. The story lines are solid and plausible, and the acting fine, led by Michael Landon who was already a TV veteran of Bonanza by the LHOP opening episode in 1974. Carrying on for roughly ten years the cast and crew became a tight knit outfit and still hold reunions. A quick search throws up loads of info on where the actors are now, where the filming took place,, and how it was (loosely) based on the series of autobiographical books by the original real life Laura Ingles. There are even Youtube videos - for example Melissa Gilbert visits the original location of the TV set Little House itself. So 45 years on, the series is still very much alive in the memories of the fans and continues to attract a following. Put 34.3277581,-118.7227367 into the search box on Google maps and you can see where the Little House filming set actually stood, the rest of the town being a short distance away along Middle Fire Road.

'Little House on the Prairie', season 1. All the stories are fit for family viewing. If you are a family person, you will be able to identify with many situations concerning the children.Late in the 1870's a two parent family with three children, settle on the outskirts of a small town called Plum Creek, in Minnesota. They are known as the Ingalls, the mother (Karen Grassle) is a charming and delightful lady. In this 1st series, those of us of a certain age will recognize some of the guest stars: Ernest Borgnine, Forrest Tucker and Red Buttons etc. There is a double episode that is played out of sequence....My set of DVD's had a slight fault on the final disc....Delivery from Amazon was speedy: within two days it was in my player.

I loved this programme as a kid and have thought about buying the DVDs before but hadn't, as I thought I might be disappointed. However, I treated myself to series one at Christmas and I am so glad I did. It was just as good - if not better - than I remember! I can recall some, but not all of the stories, but their charm does not fade and I love to see the family values and way of life back then. I remember loving Michael Landon at the time and realise now, how talented he was; a very sad loss. The whole cast was so brilliantly put together too. I would recommend this to anyone who loved the programme in their childhood and also to anyone with children now, the stories and characters are just great...5 stars!

I have just taken delivery of Season 1 "Little House on the Prairie" and already watched the first disc and it is great. I watched it many years ago when I was a teenager and always found it even then to be a complete escape from the modern world and all its problems. Despite it being hard in those days of the Pioneers there were a lot of things that we could do with bringing back such as Honesty, Self respect and Morals. I think this show will go on forever as new generations help it keep alive.Good Sunday afternoon viewing for cold winter days. Will be building a collection of these multidisc sets.Finally I can't understand why a previous reviewer complained about sound quality as I didn't need to turn volume sky high as it was fine.it was made way back in the 1970's after all.

There is little to say here that will not be obvious to any little housefan. The DVD set is well presented and the quality of reproduction is fine as long as you remember how long ago these programs were made, so the sound and visual quality is sometimes poor by modern standards.Nevertheless the whole series represents a timeless library of a time when relationships were founded on principle sadly lacking today. The challanges and events represented by each episode are as relevant as ever to the modern world. What is so rewarding is being reminded how close knit community of Walnut Grove works across all the usual age and status barriers that we are used to today, to resolve things with love and humility. They are the perfect antidote to the fractured and disfunctional "global" village we live in today. Enjoy them. They are precious.

I always loved Little House on the Prairie when I was younger as did my mother and sister, so was delighted to introduce my daughters aged 10 and 12 to the first series. We take time out and enjoy each episode huddled together on the sofa. They love it and now we have finished the first series we can't wait to buy the next. This is family viewing at its best, no sex or fowl language, and a moral to be learnt from every story. Some of the stories can bring a tear to your eye but they all end on a happy note. The characters are all delightful and the stories cover a range of topics, i.e. racism, poverty, bullying, theft. I would recommend this to anyone.

I grew up with the televised series, so I had to purchase didn't I ?!!! To watch this all again is so much fun, the young Michael Landon and that cheeky smile brings back so many memories, who wouldn't want 'Pa Ingalls' in their family! My only complaint is that having found the full 9 book set for my daughter the incredible bookworm, I have realised the filming didn't start until the 4th book of the memoirs - well that's got to leave a few prequel issues for the producers hasn't it!!! Do hope they catch on! I have no issues with the quality, in fact it is equal to or better than the analogue signal we used to have when I watched this as a child - and there are no advert breaks!!! I LOVE IT
