The lancing device only punctures the finger to generate a drop of blood so, yes, you will need to order test strips separately.

Do I need this lancing device if just want to test ketones?

You need some kind of lancing device if you are properly testing ketones with blood samples and a meter as its a more reliable way to test whether you are in ketosis than pee strips. The supplied needles also fitted my other lancet device as well as this one so the base of the lancet seems to be a standard size. Does the job, hope this helps.
