David Essex stars as Davey Jackson, a solitary canal lock-keeper whose world is changed forever by the arrival of Sarah, whose barge has just broken down. While waiting for repairs, Sarah stays at Davey's cottage and finds herself falling for his cockney charms. A delightful romantic comedy set in the glorious English countryside - and with original music by David Essex. Review: good product - loved this when it was on TV - great to watch again Review: Awesome - I remembered The River as being fun and that I recalled I loved it when it appeared on the television, way back in the 80's, now, many years on, finally I have my own copy to treasure and watch over... Awesome it is as brilliant as I remembered it and of course, if one likes Mr Essex just a wee bit, then wow, he is just perfect, and gorgeous, and, and, and well I'm in love all over again!!! David Essex can act, has so many wonderful expressions and he makes you believe he is the lock keeper.. living the dream. The other members of the cast are excellent too, the timings as they all spar off each other are flawless, and it is witty and funny, and with reference to what was going on in that decade. If I had to be critical I would have preferred no back ground laughter, but then again, that was typical of the time it was broadcast..... It comes up fresh second, (third, fourth?,) time around, and as for a first time, well, for the romantic dreamer, I'd recommend it........ Ok! must go for a stroll down towpath now... ....again..!

Classic Beeb tv comedy
I saw a comment on social media and bought this. I have to say it's not my cup of tea canned audience laughter. The quality is good however but as I said didn't rock my boat.

The River DVD
This is an excellent DVD, featuring the gorgeous David Essex when he was at his very best! We videotaped each episode every week when it was originally shown on TV, what seems like a lifetime ago now. But to have all the episodes on one DVD is really excellent. It brought back happy memories, having also seen him performing live too on stage. Thoroughly recommended DVD addition for any true David Essex fan. (But don't be surprised at the individual storylines, that were often off-the-wall, at times!) Most certainly enjoyable funny episodes, and a real pleasure to watch, many times.

Really worth a look
I remember watching this series in the late 80s and was really pleased when it was released on dvd. This series really is funny and has some great one liners. David Essex is absolutely gorgeous and was perfect for the part of Davey. The supporting cast are also excellent. I often wondered what happened to Katy Murphy, as she is great as the firey Scot Sarah. Never get bored of watching the character Tom end up thrown in the lock in every episode. The setting is breathtaking and really makes you want to go and visit where it was filmed. This is a gentle comedy with some really funny moments. Definately worth watching. There was only 1 series of this comedy but its certainly one of the better ones from the BBC.

Lovely, gentle humour
Very gentle comedy that is as much about the scenery and beautiful river shots as anything else. Sarah is an uptight, incredibly neurotic Scottish lass who finds herself stranded by Davey Jackson's cottage. What follows is a gentler version of the taming of the shrew. David Essex is gorgeous, as always, and sings the title song. I have to confess, some of the acting is a little wooden, but I still recommend this as a great trip down memory lane.

Up the river without a paddle - or much else
Firstly I must come clean and say I have always loved David Essex. I remember this series from long ago and foolishly tried to relive my revery of days gone by. It is cringingly awful - so bad you MUST watch it all just in case it gets better - which is doesn't. BUT, it is so bad it is funny! Rarely has there been such wooden acting from all concerned and possibly the worst thing of all is seeing D.E. singing the title track - it's unbelievable. Sorry David - this is naff, but I still love you.
