Good, but not a huge development over the Q3
I have had a Carlo Scala Q3 for over 3 years and was expecting big things from the new Packtalk, but having used this for a few days my initial reaction is "underwhelming".First the good points; the new push fit mount is a doddle to install, the flying 3.5mm cable makes connection to my Ultimate Ear Soundears a doddle (although I'm not looking forward to the female connector eventually wearing out and needing to buy a new mount) and the three button controls and jog/click wheel are much easier to use. Music sound quality has improved (although I can still hear the digital "buzzing" of the Bluetooth connection during silent moments) and intercom is as good as ever. So far so good - now for the minus points.Bad points; it's big, much bigger than my old Q3. Not as big as some other brands (e.g. Sena SMH5) but still creates quite a "wart" on the side of the helmet. In an era where we are used to consumer electronics getting smaller it's disappointing that Cardo can't make it more compact. The mic now has an inline connector rather than the secure (screw clamped) arrangement in my old Q3 mount. The inline connector is small but in side the helmet it has to go somewhere and in my situation it's unfortunately right next to my left ear. It took a day or two work out why I was suddenly feeling pressure against my left ear and luckily I was able to find a small gap in the helmet padding to push the connections into. Other helmets may not be so fortunate. The DMC function sounds amazing in principle but I am seriously doubting that I will ever get to use it. This function relies on everyone in the group buying the Packtalk and using DMC mode. As we know motorcyclists all have different tastes and budgets so all it takes is one person in your group not to have a Packtalk and everyone is back to using good old Bluetooth. The only solution would be for Cardo to licence this new technology to all manufacturers so every unit is compatible, but I think there is no chance of that so back to Bluetooth we all are. The one feature I am yet to try is the ability to listen to music and use the intercom at the same time. Hopefully this will be the killer feature for me, but I'm not counting on it. My tip; save a bundle and buy the Q3.UPDATE: Have tested the music + intercom feature and it works a treat! Music is continuous, not switching off and on (like the GPS instructions) and although finding a balance is tricky (volume scroll wheel affects both so using the phone volume is the only method) this feature is very good. However it only works 1 to 1. Conference in the third headset on a second channel and the music is muted. My old Q3 has three intercom channels, A. B & C while the newer Packtalk only has A & B. I paired them so the two Q3s are paired to each other on C and each to the Packtalk on A & B. I think If I pair the Q3s on B and each of them to the Pactalk on A I could still retain the music on the Packtalk during a 3 way intercom chat. The limiting factor to having simultaneous music appears to be using both intercom channels at once. It's tricky to setup, but once you conquer it the system works very well!
