Must have for the weekend lawn warrior
My St Augustin grass was weak, not flourishing, and getting overrun by other grasses like crab grass and Bermuda, no matter how well I timed the fertilizer and weed killer applications. Add the blazing heat in south east Texas and having a healthy yard to be proud of was an exercise in futility.Enter the lawn aerator. Yes, it is a physical endeavor plugging holes into the ground every 6 or so inches. But 6 weeks later, I can already tell the St Augustin is winning the battle for yard supremacy. It's root systems are getting stronger and I'm having to mow every week now. Thanks to some well-timed rains, the lawn is green and lush and water is getting absorbed deeper into the soil now. This was all the difference I needed to finally turn the corner on the exasperating weeds.I would definitely recommend this aerator. It is a must-have for any weekend lawn warrior such as myself.

Works, but does take a while
I live in SoCal in the Inland Empire. Our soil is a little more on the sandy side, but can still get to be a bit compact like dg (decomposed granite). My front yard needed a little help, so I bought this aerator to open up the soil and get more oxygen flowing. Yard definitely responded with a few weeks. The product is well built, I found it a little hard to puncture through my dense soil. What I ended up doing was getting a rubber mallet to help hammer it into the soil to get as deep a plug as possible. After going down one side and coming back of the front yard, I ended up with a lot of blisters. So if your soil is really hard and compact, 170 lbs may not be enough to really puncture through the hard ground.Hole size is fine, not too small and not too big. Tray allows it to catch the plugs when they get pushed through.Assembly is easy and the black looks nice. All in all, I like it, but it does require a lot of manual labor.

Great product with some modifications
So I did my front yard which we live on a corner lot. Great product but could use some modifications. Two issues with product:1. The bolts will bang your knee.2. The bar you push on will hurt the arch of your foot especially with a large yard.My suggestion if you get this product is to cut a large pool noodle and cut down the middle. Wrap the front covering the bolts. My yard was a 2 day job. Day one my inner knee was so bruised from constantly hitting the top bolt cap cover. 2nd day with pool noodle it was so much better. I should have used more pool noodle on the bar that you push so you don’t bruise your foot arch.

I like it
This is a great alternative to paying someone to come out and aerate. I have some shallow tree roots and worry about them being damaged. With this, I can work around the tree roots and not worry about hurting the tree. I've found that soaking the ground before use helps a lot...we have heavy clay soil here. Then, I also found that the holes should be cleaned out at the end, otherwise the dirt is SUPER hard to get out. I haven't had any issues with clogging so far. I don't mind the time or the effort it takes, I figure I'm getting some exercise and getting my lawn aerated at a price I can actually afford!

It’s a disappointment
After using this several times, the aerator holes often get plugged. Then you have to stop what you are doing and try to unplug the holes with the tool that is supplied by the manufacturer. Believe me, this is not always that easy. You may have to use a hammer to push the tool prong inside each hole. I am now looking for a better aerator with wheels and spikes.

Excellent for young trees and shrubs too!
This is an excellent purchase! I did my homework and will echo others: this is a super strong aerator that I purchased to break up my black clay soil. I’ve used it during the spring when the soil was still damp, as well as during the height of summer when the soil is dry and brick hard, and the steel tongs do the job! Has made a huge difference in my young trees and shrubs ability to grow and thrive. I’ve filled the holes with worm castings, compost, tree bark…anything that helps create more fertile soil, and it has made all the difference. Before this, I’d broken two dewalt corded hand drills with an auger attachment. (Yes my soil is that dense). This works like a dream. Super happy with purchase.

Works well at price point
Easy to assemble and goes in easy. Not much exertion. Does get clogged easily but is not difficult to clean out.
