Review: Sadly relevant - When reading this book, you cannot help but be filled with an innate sense of sadness, in part due to the horrific tales which Carson tells (all of which are a necessity in order for the book to hit home) and in part due to the fact that many of these tales still seem relevant today and most of the others, with a little modification, can be applied to much of the environmental damage our species is causing today. A highly relevant book, which is very touching, Carsons poetic writing style lends itself to a very easy read, this coupled with solid information and hard-hitting examples of the damage done make this book an absolute must read for everyone. I firmly believe that every politician & world leader should be made to read this book and remind them of the dangers and consequences their actions have on the environment and perhaps make them think that little bit deeper about the consequences of deforestation, of removing native untouched habitat and of course of the use of harsh & unnatural chemicals in day to day life. I cannot recommend this book enough, it does make you look at things differently and that is ultimately one of the most important things. Review: The definitive environmental book - Although written over 60 years ago, it is as relevant today as back then. This book really needs no introduction. It's a shocking testimony of human hubris and the damage caused by greed. Not only did wildlife get decimated but livestock and people died from toxic pesticides. Nature quickly evolved as insects quickly became resistant to the poisons. But the knowledge led to some of the first environmental legislation in the world despite the efforts of the chemical industry to rubbish and discredit Rachel Carson. An excellent read.

Amazing book
Beautifully written prose. Published in the 1960s and absolutely relevant for today. There is much to be learned from the book. If only people - and governments - had taken the author's message to heart, particularly in regard to pesticides, then agriculture, the environment and earth's atmosphere would not be under such pressure today . It's a book everyone could learn from and would make an excellent set work for schools.

A book that made a difference.
This is a difficult book to review. By the half-way mark there is a growing feeling of tedium as Carson marshalls her attack, dots every i and crosses every tee. Yet it is a book that challenged big business and changed peoples minds. More a document really. A marvellous and depressing one.

An important work
It's the 50th anniversary of the publication of the Silent Spring. In 1962 Carson's analysis was both ground breaking and controversial. Her view that in killing "bad pests" , people affect the fragile balance in the natural world, was attacked by the forces of industry in the USA. The interdependence of living organisms and the chapter on soil makes fascinating reading. Silent Spring has been described as the book that that birth to environmentalism. That's a remarkable claim to fame, but Carson's use of language and persuasive style, makes this an easy book to both read and reflect upon.

The print quality does an injustice to a classic book
I am still reading the book and have found it shocking even now. My low score is for the very poor quality of the paper and printing.

The author hits the nail on the head, our lives our countries have not been better thanks to the use of chemicals. The chemical company wants us to believe that they have our hopes and dreams with a chemical cocktail. When we with their help have poisoned the last lake, river and ocean will mankind get it. With there excellent marketing they have sold us false hope while lining their pockets, with thirty pieces of silver or in their case gold.
