Avantree E171 - AUX 3.5mm Wired Earbuds with Microphone & Volume Control

UPDATE TO ORIGINAL REVIEW: I am updating this review that I had initially submitted. Approximately 8 months after I bought these (Sep. 2023), the right earbud stopped working all the sudden. I could jiggle and hold the volume control and the sound would come back, but that was not an option. Therefore, I contacted Avantree Support and let them know what happened. They responded by email within 24 hours (other responses for the Support Incident were even quicker than that), and indicated they would send me a new set at no charge as they were still under warranty and provided clear instructions on how to order the new ones. The new ones arrived yesterday, 05/28/24 and they work like a charm. I am still very satisfied with the earbuds, and the professional customer service provided by Avantree. I still feel these are a very good value for the price, given the way they handled replacing the original defective set. ORIGINAL: I have had these Avantree E171 - Sports Earbuds Wired with Microphone for about 3 weeks now and I mainly use these on the treadmill when I run. I have found these to be more than adequate for that purpose. I previously bought Koss $6 headphones for the same purpose but I found those didn't last long enough before one of the earpieces would just go dead. With the Avantree, I can see that for the price, they are a little better made and the wiring is a little stronger. They don't seem flimsy at all, and the earbuds themselves and the portion that fits on your ears seem to be sturdy. They fit on my ears nicely enough with the loops and they do not bother me with or without glasses. They come with the middle size eartips attached, but I did find that when I run on the treadmill, they seemed to jump around a little, so I put on the larger ones. (The earbuds come with 3 sizes of eartips). The eartips are a little hard to get off and get the new ones on but you just need to grab the main part of the earbud and grab the base of the eartip and twist and pull a little to take it off, then work the new one on to the stem by working the opening of the eartip on the stem and pushing down and twisting a little. I have dexterity issues with my hands and I still got them on and off in about a minute. As far as the sound, these are not bass heavy at all, but that is fine (especially for the price) as the music I listen to doesn't have much bass (such as with rap and some rock), but I found there is enough bass where needed, and they provide a nice rich, melodic sound without being "tinny" at all. In addition, although they do not have built-in noise cancelling functionality, I find that with the larger eartips when I am on the treadmill in our community fitness room, I do not hear the lady that babbles on loudly and continuously :). Thank You Avantree! I have not tried these with a cell phone, so I can't speak to using with that. But, I have tried these on an iPod shuffle, an iPod touch and an iPad. The product listing here under "Before You Buy, Please Note That..." notes: "The built-in volume control does not work on PC, laptop, or iOS MP3 players, and the volume up button does not work on the Pixel 3A and Galaxy A9, S10, and Note 9 (it'll activate Google Assistant instead)." I will verify the in-cord volume control and the pause button does not work on the iPod shuffle, but I found they DO work on the iPod Touch and my iPad. Seems to be a bit of a bonus. Overall, I think they are worth the price and provide a set of nice sounding wired earbuds.

Excellent sound quality and bass! Kinda surprised it didn’t come with extra interchangeable earbud rubbers for different sizes but mine fit and are comfortable, at least. I recommend. Suitable for exercising, cord length is generous. Controls work as advertised. Durability is left to be seen!

These lasted just over a year before the connection started failing. I use these mainly for phone calls and audio books. The sound quality is good but the microphone is not the greatest. I sometimes am told that my voice doesn't come through very loud. To be fair, i normally only have the right ear bud in my ear and allow the other to dangle. The left ear bud is failing at the point where it's bent while dangling. The right side is still in mostly good working condition. There are three buttons connected to the right ear bud cord. The edge buttons control the volume and the middle I use to pick up and end calls. They work well. My ear canals are on the smaller side so I use the smallest ear inserts provided. The buds hook over the ears so they stay in place pretty well and don't require adjusting for hours. But after a few hours, they will sometimes hurt and I'll have to spin them to readjust to a slightly different position. All in all, these are decent wired ear buds especially for the price. Just wish they lasted longer than a year.

Just what I was looking for. I needed a wired pair of earphones. I prefer wired earphones that hang over the ear because they are resistant to falling off when exercising.

It hasn't been long so if this should change I will update this review but so far these are fantastic. Especially for the price I paid for them. The sound isn't amazing but it is still very good. They are surprisingly good at noise canceling which I wasn't expecting and they stay in just fine when I run with them. They aren't incredibly snug but I don't find myself constantly adjusting them like I have with many other head phones. I was really just looking for cheap headphones I could run and be active with and these fit the bill. Definitely recommend. Edit: I’ve had these headphones for about 10 months now. I’ve used them weekly for workouts so I’d say the use was pretty rigorous but not crazy. The headphones have begun to malfunction in a bunch of different ways. First, the microphone for phone calls and whatnot stopped working within probably a month or two of purchase. Not a big deal because I don’t use these to make calls or anything so that was fine. But recently, the headphones only work if the cord is in a very specific position. It is very finnicky and frustrating. The headphones also have a very weird issue where the volume will turn down randomly on my phone over and over. It’s not the physical volume control on the headphones either, it’s somehow changing the volume on my phone’s OS. This only happens when these specific headphones are plugged it. It also randomly touches certain spots on the screen whenever the headphones are plugged in which is strange but an issue I’ve (strangely enough) come across before and not a huge issue as the screen is off 99% of the time I use the headphones anyway but still a bit annoying. Between all of these issues, these headphones are sadly just about useless now. While I would still probably recommend these headphones as the price is right and they worked great for a while. I’m still disappointed that they didn’t last at least a year. So I would say that these are a pretty decent pair of headphones with a great price but maybe look elsewhere for a more durable solution to your audio needs.

At first, I thought the price was steep. However, I found the earbuds were of high quality and has a long cord for accessibility. They are sleek and modern. Although they are not Bluetooth, they are seamless and modern-looking. They are also very lightweight so they won't weigh down one's ears. The price is very reasonable; I have used earbuds before, and these are very comfortable and work very well.

I am very pleasantly surprised by these ear buds. The fit is perfect for me and the sound quality is awesome! Great bang for the buck. I would definitely recommend this product.

Poor quality

I work as a call center assistant and since this quarantine I have been working at home. I normally always wear wireless earphones, but with the program we use at work and using remote computer from home, wireless makes the calls choppy. I needed to find some wired headphones to go with my iphone X. I got these hoping they would work well for my work and I am pleasantly surprised. Especially for the price! I have been using them for a few days now, for 8 hrs straight. I have been told by others on the phone that the mic is working well, I am coming through very clear - so no issues at all there. I can hear everyone fine, the sound quality is actually really great and they fit me well and are very comfortable. For me, I need the type of headphones that either go fully around the head or wrap around the ear. The little earbud type and air-pods always continuously fall out of my ear. With these, I can comfortably work at my desk, move and look around, the earphones don't fall out. The wrap around isn't rigid, but that might make more comfortable. I don't have any issues with discomfort. I also wear glasses while reading and working on the computer and they fit well with my glasses. So I do recommend these, so far so good. I haven't had any issues yet with them.
