Q: Is this suitable for stoping small birds

yes it seems to stop pidgeons and pretty much everything from landing on the pergola

Q: What's the gap between spikes for cable ties?

The gap between the base of the spikes is about 6mm. Much easier to use cable ties as although their are holes for screws that method is painful unless you use a magnetic screwdriver!!

Q: Would decking screws be suitable for attaching the spikes to the top of a pergola and if so, what size screw would be best?

You don't need anything like a decking screw to fix these to timber etc. I used zinc plated self-tapping pozi pan head screws, size 6 x half inch, or 3.5mm x 13mm in metric. The fixing holes in the spikes are pre drilled for a number 6 or 3.5mm screw. As an alternative to zinc plated your could use brass if you wanted extract corrosion protection.

Shorter than expected ted.

They don’t really stop birds sitting on the fence but ok for cats. They are quite short and needs at least 3 to cover a fence panel. I thought they’d be longer as I should of read the measurements better.

Disappointed

Difficult to fit to standard fences and easily broken. Doubt it will cope with winter temperatures.

Keeps pigeons off

Seems to be working with deterring the pigeons from sitting on fence which was the goal. Small birds still sit but I'm not fussed about them. We used cable ties to secure them
