So much better than the last one
Update after about 2 years of constant use by 2 dogs and 2 cats: Still works perfectly with an excellent seal against the great outdoors. Great product! We had a flexible flap dog door for the last ten years. I hated it. It drove me up the wall trying to get it to seal. The flap invariably deformed around the edges and the cold air would whistle in. I could take it apart and use an iron on a low setting to straighten it out and get an okay seal for a while, but it only lasted a month or so and we were back to effectively having a gaping maw that ushered in cold air. The old door flap was also thin and I swear the cold radiated right through it.I bought a small cat door for my daughter that is similar to this design. It was so good at keeping the cold air and rain out that I finally decided to replace our old dog door with this one.Best thing I have ever done for keeping our house warmer and cutting down on the heating bills! What a wonderful improvement! I really can't say enough nice things about this dog door. The dogs and cats were initially reluctant to use it, because the flap was solid and sort of whomped shut, but they adapted to it after a couple of weeks. It was not difficult to put in. I installed the previous dog door too. I had to enlarge the width of the previous hole and scabbed in a piece of plywood at the top. We also used some spray foam, in the gap behind the frame, to improve the weatherproofing. If you are looking for a dog door that really keeps the cold, wind, and rain out, then I think you will find this one meets your needs.

great doors!
The doors are probably used much more in a kennel setting then they would be in a normal household. Last fall, I started to build a small kennel. It has 4 runs on each side of the building. I only finished one side (4 runs) and bought 4 of these inexpensive doors thinking they would get me by for now. Then in the spring when I finished the build and finished the other 4 runs I planned to purchase commercial grade dog doors. The original 4 have been on for over a year now and show no sign of wearing out. I have even seen pups half in and half out of the door, laying on their backs and chewing the flap. They held up so well that instead of buying the noisy expensive commercial dog doors I purchased 4 more for the other side. They are quiet and have worked well. I also love the extra light that they allow to come into the kennel. On extremely windy fall/winter days, the flaps will sometimes blow open, but when I put up a tarp on the perimeter fence ( I planned to anyway to protect the dogs from the cold winter wind) the problem was solved. They were easy to install, but to be fair, I do building projects all the time.UPDATE: 2 years later and still very happy with them!

Not so easy to install, but ultimately a good pet door
NOT that easy to install, AND you need a jig saw AND a hack saw (or be prepared to buy screws that are the right size for your door). It took my brother 2-1/2 hours to install this for me (with a little help from me), and he's no hack at projects. Issues: 1) the screws come way too long just in case you have a very fat door. I don't have a hack saw, so that was a big time drain. 2) There are 4 plastic inserts that fit into the sides of the inside perimeter, and these also have to be cut to the right size (you will have to do a little math here). They are of plastic and not that easy to cut. 3) While we were struggling with getting the two sides installed on the door and the screws into the holes and through to the other side and into a nut that you can't hold, we forgot to watch that these interior plastic pieces were also aligned properly. They weren't, so we had to loosen everything and get them tucked back in. You can see in the pics that these side pieces aren't a perfect fit, even if they were "tucked in" better. I don't think that's a big problem, mostly cosmetic, but an added hassle. 4) No spare parts! We dropped a tiny little nut and had difficulty finding it! 5) As others have mentioned, NO TEMPLATE. Taping the pet door to your door to trace the opening and drill holes is doable, but it's stupid! Is one more piece of paper going to break the bank? (But I'll add that it's a very decent price for this door.)I have installed dog doors myself at least two previous times, and this one was harder. Hard to do by yourself IMHO. But, once it's in and aligned, it's a good door. I like that it has a hard plastic flap, so no warping or sticking to worry about. I like that it has a slide-on locking panel, which helps with weather issues AND my pets can see when it's not open for them.My dog is still intimidated by it. Even cookies aren't coaxing her. I'm confident she'll get it, though.Bottom line? Harder to install than it needs to be, but a good door at a good price.

Works great and looks good
After searching on Amazon for a while for dog doors I ultimately settled on this one because of the harder plastic door, little brushes lining the door, and the fact that it magnetizes all the way around instead of just at the bottom.I have an older dog who has had leg surgery and certainly isn't gimpy but has lost a step so I was mildly concerned how he would handle going in and out of the door but so far there has been no trouble to speak of. I love how hard the door is and the all-around magnetization plus little brushes do a good job of keeping drafts out - combined with the door and very little air gets through, especially if the doggie door is caulked on the outside when installed.I noticed a reviewer complained about the door. Yes it is different than some others and might not seem to be quality but it snaps in tightly (which is what you care about right?) and simply requires pushing a little button in to release. Anyone complaining about that feels EXTREMELY nitpicky to me.All-in-all an extremely sturdy door that blends in well with the white door it is installed into. Heavy and good magnetization provide just enough strength while allowing for even an older, post-surgery dog to use it.

Nice hard plastic flap. Not a cheap flap.
I love that this door has a hard plastic flap like most cat doors. Not that cheap plastic that warps or bends that you see on most dog doors.. It was super easy to install. The only reason I gave a 4 star was because the 4 pieces they have you install in between the 2 sides didn't line up great and left gaps at the top. And also after it was installed the doors kinda warp a little and the door cover does not fit properly. These are 2 very minor things that didn't affect the overall use of the door. Very nice door and very strong magnet. I will update in a few months on how well it holds up to my 2 dogs using it. Update 9/13/25: changed to 5 star as this thing held up to 3 large dogs and 2 cats. I just replaced it today with the exact same one. Only reason for replacing was it was dirty and I wanted a cleaner one. Definitely will be buying this again!!

Good door, poor installation instructions
This is a good dog door once installed. I would give the final product 5 stars. However, the installation experience with this was horrible, and if I were to base my rating on that, I would have given it 1 star. I gave it the average of those two numbers, 3 stars. Here are my gripes about the installation and instructions:- Other Pet Mate products I've installed had template that you could tape to the door, trace around, then cut out. For this door, they want you to tape one of the plastic pieces to the door, trace the inside, then add some padding to that. Not that big of a deal, but would have been way easier with a template.- They require that you cut the bolts to fit your door. They should have included bolts for a standard door, and then also longer bolts that could be cut to size if needed. After cutting the bolts, unless you have a tool that cuts them extremely clean, it gets pretty tough to thread the nut onto the bolt. I had to go purchase more bolts from the hardware store because of this.- Getting the plastic liners to fit in between the two plastic pieces through the door is tough to do for one person, since there isn't really anything holding everything together at that point of the install. I had to have my wife come help hold everything together. Could have been designed better.- You need to pay attention to which side you insert the nuts and bolts. One side of the plastic is molded in a hexagon shape so that the nut will hold in place when screwing in the bolt. I didn't see this at first, and it was (obviously) tough to screw it in backwards. A note about this in the instructions would have been nice.- They provide you with inserts to cover the holes for the nuts and bolts, however they are a VERY tight fit, and I actually had to cut two of them down just so that they would fit into the holes.Anyways, after finally getting everything installed, the door works well. Sometimes it won't come to a close after my dog goes through it, but I think that it will get better as it wears a little.

It took 21+ years for our last Dog Mate door to break!
I installed this brand somewhere between 1999-2003. It was VERY durable. The older one broke because the dog came in & went back out with a tie down attached to his collar. He ended up putting unnecessary force on the door flap. Otherwise, the older one would still be in use. I specifically sought out this same brand as a replacement hoping that it would be just as durable. The design appears to be the same material and thickness. We have high hopes that this one will perform as well as the older model. This is a 2-person install to help hold the panels between the outside frame and the inside frame (what protects the inner parts of the door where you cut the hole). Otherwise, it's a simple concept to install.

Great Dog (Will Be Used for Cats) Door
Waiting for installation for more review but...so far I can tell that it is quality made, will be quiet, and work great for us. The door we have now is noisy. This one will be an improvement. When the cats fly through it at 2 am we won't be startled. Although it says dog door we opt for this size to accommodate some of our bigger felines. If you have bigguns, don't buy the small *dog*door. It just isn't big enough altho it is exactly the same quality. Will update.4/12/2013Well, finally got this door installed. The cats immediately started to use it. It is quiet and attractive. It took 2 to install it to the inside door because of the insulation. They had a hard time lining up the screws. The other was installed easily from a screened in porch to the outside. That one they finished in a few minutes. No complaints so far. Very satisfied. Now if I can only get my little dog to use it.
