This is one of my favourite thrillers from the 70's, with an atmosphere of menace in the music score by Michael Small...but with savage edits that have, to my knowledge, never been released and seen in any format, since the disastrous second audience screening, when someone shouted out that the film was "sick!"; and others in the audience complaining about the violence - which alarmed Paramount. A whole chunk involving Roy Scheider fighting 2 killers, who murdered a friend of his, amounting to 8.5 minutes, were removed; believed to be for the brutal violence. Author Goldman objected. Also edited, the scene where Roy Scheider provokes Szell into stabbing him with a hidden knife, was, originally very bloody, with gory close-ups; as well, the two torture scenes of Dustin Hoffman, including drilling into his tooth, were heavily edited. I have previously read as much as 25 minutes were excised from the original pre-theatrical, intended release. But knowing this doesn't ruin the film. One critic, expressing his surprise at the edits, said he had seen worse that year, including genital mutilation, in other films he had reviewed! The film ending is different to the book, with some other changes, which I won't spoil, as some may want to read it. The film was a financial and critical success. I never notice any flaws in the acting, or editing. Excellent cinematography, music, action, some humour. But this version has the original wide-screen aspect ratio only from the beginning to where Szells' brother leaves the bank, and near to the end; with in-between being 16 x 9. Highly recommended, and worthy of 5 ⭐s!

High adventure.
An exciting and original story - packed with thrills.

picture quality fluxulates but overall a nice transfer.
disc was out of its case and scratched, seems to have occurred with a few customers when ordering from amazon us.

Terrific thriller
A terrific slow-burning thriller with great performances. It doesn’t deserve the 18 rating and 15 would be quite adequate.

A brilliant film with great actors great story, they don't make them like this anymore

Brilliant film and 4k bluray
If only more 4k bluray came out in the UK. I would buy more. Unfortunately many of the best films are USA only. So I wait for a price drop. Marathon dropped sufficiently and I bought straight away. I'll confine my review to the PQ as just about everyone knows what a marvellous film this is. PQ is really good. Hdr is natural and balanced. They have done a great job with the 4k bluray. Highly recommended. But only when the price is right!
