Works for me!
We've owned this ceramic Norpro counter-top compost pail for over a year now and use it constantly.Norpro 1 Gallon Ceramic Compost Keeper, WhiteWe love it! We also use the Norpro carbon filter Replacement Filters for the Norpro Kitchen Compost Crock (set of 6) in the lid and the degradable compost bags, also by Norpro. Norpro Degradable Compost Bags, 50 PiecesWe live in a rural area, where fruit flies, no-see-ums, and gnats can be a big problem. And it gets HOT here in the summer time! Yet we have experienced none of the problems with odor, fruit flies, or gnats that some other reviewers have described. Not once! Nor have we experienced any of the other problems mentioned by other reviewers, such as problems with the handle or chipping, poor fitting lid, etc.We especially like the size of this compost pail. It's just right for holding our compostable kitchen waste until our next trip to the garden. The liner keeps the pail clean. The liners are sized generously enough that there's no "overflow". It's easy to lift out the compost-filled liner, put a twist-tie (included with the liners) around it, and take it to the garden. We've never had a leak or split. No mess at all! And the compost pail stays clean as a whistle! It's been our experience that the filter in the lid does exactly what it's supposed to do -- unless you don't empty your compost pail when you should! (We've made that mistake a couple of times.) If you let the pail get too full and your kitchen waste come in contact with the filter, the filter will start to mold and mildew. And then you have to replace it. (Maybe that's what attracts the fruit flies, etc.?)We couldn't be happier with this product, or with its accessory products by Norpro. It's such a clean and convenient way to keep our compostable kitchen waste until our next trip to the garden! It doesn't take up much space, and it looks nice on our kitchen counter, too!We would definitely purchase this item again!

As an avid gardener and environmentally conscious individual, the Norpro 1 Gallon Ceramic Compost Keeper has become an invaluable addition to my kitchen. This compost keeper not only adds a touch of elegance to my countertop, but it also plays a crucial role in reducing waste and nourishing my plants. The first thing that struck me about this compost keeper is its beautiful design. The classic white ceramic finish complements any kitchen decor, making it a stylish and functional addition to my space. Unlike unsightly plastic compost bins, the Norpro Compost Keeper blends seamlessly with my kitchen's aesthetic. With its generous 1-gallon capacity, this compost keeper can hold a significant amount of kitchen scraps, ensuring that I don't have to empty it frequently. It's the perfect size for a small household like mine, and the handle makes it easy to carry outside when it's time to transfer the compost to my garden.Speaking of convenience, the replaceable charcoal filter system is a game-changer. It effectively eliminates any unpleasant odors, allowing me to keep the compost keeper on my countertop without worrying about any unwelcome smells. The filter lasts for several months before needing replacement, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. The ceramic material is not only aesthetically pleasing but also easy to clean. A simple rinse and wipe with mild soap keep it looking pristine and ready for continuous use. The durable build ensures that the compost keeper withstands daily wear and tear without any signs of wear. Moreover, this compost keeper has significantly reduced my household waste. I find myself throwing fewer food scraps into the trash, knowing that they will be transformed into rich, nutrient-dense compost for my garden. It's incredibly satisfying to know that I'm contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle. With the Norpro 1 Gallon Ceramic Compost Keeper, composting has become a seamless and rewarding process. I feel a sense of pride knowing that I'm actively contributing to reducing landfill waste and nourishing my plants with homemade compost.

Pretty design and practical product
I knew when I saw this print I had to get it for my wife. She has several pieces with flowers and butterflies in blue. We have a lot of veggie scraps and egg shells for the compost pile and a strainer full of them on the kitchen counter was not an option. This crock is large enough to hold a typical day's worth of compostable stuff. It comes with a "filter" that can be removed and washed. The first few times we emptied it, the bail came off. The hooks, or "handles" on either side can be tightened with a pair of pliars but we didn't want to risk damaging it. This problem is easy to work around by holding the bail to the side of the crock and carefully tipping it into the bin.Pros -- Pattern matches almost any decor; item is sturdy and when properly used, odor freeCons -- As you can see from the picture, lid is not always a perfect fit; the "filter" should be replaceablle; the bail handle comes loose

Wonderful and helpful kitchen product.
This is an attractive, small compost container for the kitchen counter. Styling goes excellent with our "rustic-modern" kitchen, has small foot-print. Holds kitchen compost for two-three person household for 1 to 2 weeks. If you have smaller children I would not recommend as it is ceramic and would break if knocked off counter. To address a couple of complaints by other reviewers.1) Bugs, Flies, Fruitflies -- Use the included charcoal filters in the lid and make sure you put them in correctly and you won't have any problem, some people just don't seem to think it seems. Yes, I live in Texas, and we have all sorts of flying vermin, also have cats and doors are frequently opened closed. Have used now for 3 months and my fruitfly problem has disappeared as compared to even gargage can.2) Weak handle -- Mine has a VERY sturdy heavy metal handle, I would be hard pressed to pull it off or bend it and I have strong grip of 200 lb guy. Maybe they have redesigned this feature and I have the NEW model.I do recommend you get the little disposable bags (they are very handy to carry out without taking the "bucket" and are biodegradable in my compost pile outside), also be smart and order an extra set of the carbon filter lid inserts to control smells, they last for about 6-8 wks each.

Perfect Size and Color for My Kitchen.
Our city recently started food waste collection so I decided to get a receptacle to hold ours until collection day.I chose this one for the size, design and color. It looks nice on our kitchen counter, easy to clean and just the right size for the two of us.Even though it came with a filter I purchased a 2 pack of replacement so I would have them on hand for when it needs to be changed. We have been using it since Jan. 21, 2024 and have not noticed any odor.About a week later I purchased a pack of 100 Small Trash Bags 1.2 Gallon that fit nicely and when full still gives room to twist and tie off for disposal.Though the container is easy to clean I recommend getting bags to line it. Along with the filter it helps keep odors at bay.

If you dump your compost keeper every day or two, this is a nice product.
This is a good compost keeper for use on your counter top. What I like most is the attractive, bright red design. The size is also perfect for use next to the kitchen sink. Also, the cost for this keeper is $10-15 less than only slightly better products I had found. However, the vented top with "filter" is not as nice as I had hoped. The filter is not very substantial and it is held in place by pressing the filter into the slightly smaller sized top. The filter has stayed in place, so far, but I keep expecting it to fall out when I open the lid. The filter does not keep the compost from smelling after more than a couple days. Also, the handle is held to the side by simply twisting around the post (see product photo). This is not a secure setup and I have had the handle fall off on one occasion. I no longer use the handle to lift the compost keeper, which really isn't a problem.Bottom line: This is a fine compost keeper if you dump it into your compost heap every couple days, just don't carry it by the handle.

Perfect!
We;ve been composting for years and have used a plastic container that isn't all that attractive. This one is functional and looks great on the countertop! We've been using it to gather fruit and vegetable scraps as well as coffee grounds (with filter) and tea bags. The perforated lid allows moisture out. It is very easy to keep clean! We haven't been using the charcoal filter for now because we don't have an issue with odor or flies. We may need to use it later this summer since we historically have an issue with fruit flies when we start bringing tomatoes in from the garden.I did read other reviews that reference this as a "composter." It is clearly labelled as a "keeper." For that purpose, we are very happy.
