A captivating hybrid of 80s electronica and aggressive guitars, curiously fused with a cinematic quality of melodic progressions. Their 2005 debut, VIOLET catapulted them into the hearts of not only electronic but rock fans as well. While the band works on their next album for late 2007, Metropolis is re-releasing this out-of-print, self-released 2002 record, featuring early versions of the popular tracks "Happy Birthday", "Horror Show", "Video Kid" and five bonus tracks.

Theres nothing here not too love from the raucous "Happy Birthday" to the sinister "Lovers ...
Hard to believe this album is now nearly 15 years old!! Absolutely blinding debut by Birthday Massacre, they take Siouxsie esque songs and wrap them in gorgeous 80's alternative synth sounds... Theres nothing here not too love from the raucous "Happy Birthday" to the sinister "Lovers end". For some reason this album is best played after dark and around Halloween!

Excellent Album
Heard Happy Birthday at a goth night I work at liked it and took a punt on the whole album. Now I have bought all four Birthday Massacre albums in quick succession.

Beautiful music let down slightly by production
As far as the music on this album goes, I'm with GothBabe07. Standout tracks for me are To Die For - the song that first made me notice TBM; it's just breathtakingly beautiful - and Happy Birthday, but the album is consistently musically lovely. Unfortunately, the production doesn't quite do it justice; at times it's fuzzy and indistinct, like listening through a soft-focus filter. it's especially noticeable on To Die For, where some of the amazing dynamism the track should have had (the transition from the whispered "open your eyes" to the first chorus - it sends chills up my back as it is, but it should induce coronaries) unfortunately gets lost in overcompression. Clearly I'm not the only one who thought so; the band rerecorded TDF for their latest album (unfortunately that version loses this one's... charming innocence, for want of a better description).Oh well, at least it's nowhere near as bad as the godawful mess mastering made of Dismantled's "Standard Issue"! And I suspect most people won't notice or care, which is as it should be; as I say, the music takes my breath away. And that's what it's all about, isn't it?

My first TBM album...
Having heard two of the songs on the album already, I knew I had to get it. And it was worth every penny. Sweet yet sinister, candyfloss laced with razorblades. Singer Chibi's almost childlike voice paints bizarre through-the-looking-glass soundscapes; the lyrics are dark and somewhat twisted. In short - it's a damn good CD.
