## Description

Product Description When used at the first signs of a cold, Vicks First Defence Nasal Spray has been proven to help stop a cold in its tracks: it helps to trap, inactivate and remove the cold virus. Despite your efforts if the virus still develops into a cold, it may be shorter and less severe than an average cold. Vicks First Defence nasal spray is a medical device. Ingredients Aqua, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Succinic Acid, Disodium Succinate, Pca, Phenethyl Alcohol, Zinc EDTA, Zinc Acetate, Polysorbate 80, Menthol, Camphor, Sodium Saccharin, Eucalyptol Directions Apply 2-3 sprays per nostril immediately within the first 24-36 hours after feeling the 1st signs of a cold such as a tickle at the back of your throat, or sneezing. Use up to 4 times a day. Avoid inhaling deeply. For best results continue to use for 2 days after symptoms subside. Not suitable for children under 12. Safety Warning Not suitable for children under 12 years of age. It is recommended that pregnant and breast-feeding women consult with a healthcare professional before use. Do not use the same bottle of VICKS First Defence for more than one person as this may spread infection. For nasal use only. Do not use more than the recommended dose. Review: It does work, provided you use it properly and are patient. - Before spraying, sit down and tilt your head back slightly. Place the nozzle as far up your nose as it will go (without excessive force) and dispense three sprays. Then; holding the other nostril down with your finger, take in some gentle breaths, encouraging the fluid to enter up into your nasal cavities (part that gets blocked when you have a cold). Be careful you don’t inhale too hard as it can be quite unpleasant this – though you do get used to it. It feels like acid is being zonked up your nasal cavity. They recommend in the instructions for you NOT to do this, but I’ve found it works better if you do. Up in your nasal tubes is where the cold virus resides and develops. Ironically when you take the spray, it may give you cold like symptoms for up to an hour or so, sometimes a little longer. This is your body reacting to the foreign nature of the spray, trying to get rid of it. Hopefully as it gets rid of it, the spray will have trapped much of the virus by that time, expelling it out of your nose as your body naturally cleanses (sneezing or blowing nose). It’s important that as soon as you ‘think’ you have a cold developing then you must start taking the spray, up to 3 doses per day (morning, afternoon and night). We all occasionally feel tingles in our nasal cavities, and it doesn’t always mean you’ve picked up a cold virus or indeed if it’ll develop into one. However, I recommend you don’t take the risk and don’t wait until you know for sure it’s the cold starting. You could end up wasting a couple of days, giving the virus more time to ‘bed-in’ and grow. The spray works best at preventing the cold if you use it immediately on suspicion. Once you start taking it, how many days do you take it for? That’s a good question, and it all depends. I’ve been using the spray on/off for 4/5 months now and find that you need to listen to your body, or rather your nose. This is going to sound gross; but if you can ‘pick’ solid matter with you finger from your nose, that’s usually a good sign that the virus has been expelled and you may stop taking the spray. But if you’re still using hankies or feeling tingles in your nose, it’s probably best to continue with the treatment. If in doubt, continue the treatment for a further day – just to be sure. The shortest time I’ve taken the spray for, when first feeling the cold symptoms is 4 days. The maximum time is two weeks. Depending on your luck? the spray will do one of two things: 1) Stop the virus developing to any perilous level and eradicates it within 3-4 days. You will not develop the cold as the virus has been completely killed. 2) The spray is unable to kill the virus completely but manages to contain it. With this, the spray effectively pauses the virus, preventing it from spreading/taking hold. You then become dependent on your body’s natural immune system destroying the virus which it will do naturally in two weeks or so. Clearly option 1) would be the most desirable, but if it ends up being option 2) then I urge you to be patient and continue taking the spray. If you give up taking the spray after a week (before your body has had a chance to fight and kill off the virus) THEN it WILL take hold, developing into a full cold, and you’ll need to wait a FURTHER two weeks at least for your body to fight it. I believe this is what a lot of people are reporting on the reviews: they have become frustrated, impatient they need to take the spray for longer than they were expecting to. As I work in a job that involves being around a lot of people all the time, I’ve found that during the cold season (November to February) it’s a good idea to take a dosage when I arrive at work. In doing this it appears to prevent ANY virus from getting in at all. At the weekends, I don’t do this. If you’re like me and you HATE having the cold/sore throat then this spray is a godsend and definitely well worth the money. Although I’ve only been using it for 4/5 months I can say with confidence that the reason why I’ve not got a cold, despite being exposed to it at work continuously and the cold weather, is down to this spray. During the cold season I’ll never be without it now.
Review: It works - It works for me, no a single cold or respiratory issue this year while using it.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can you use on daily basis to prevent colds?**
A: When used at the first signs of a cold, Vicks First Defence nasal spray has been clinically proven to help stop a cold in its tracks and not develop into a full-blown cold (it can also reduce symptom severity and duration). We don't recommend to use this on a daily basis as the product isn't tested for such usage. Your Vicks Team.

**Q: For how long is it effective? Also, roughly how many sprays in the 15ml bottle? I've got long haul flights coming up & want to be prepared.**
A: You need to use it a few times a day - it says on the instructions. I sometimes actually use it more than specified if I'm in an enclosed space with a lot of sick people and feel I might be catching a cold.

**Q: Why does this have a short expiry date**
A: I bought it 23rd May 2023, expiry date is October 2023. I will have used such a tiny bit by then I would be throwing away 80-90% of it. What a waste. I am returning it.

**Q: How long does it take to work? Ive been using 3 sprays 4 times per day for 24 hours and my cold feels the same. Stuck at the back of my nose/throat.**
A: Depends on how quickly you catch the infection. If you catch it right at the very start before it takes hold and get a good night's sleep, you'll probably be pretty much fine by the morning but if you catch it later, it takes longer to work. Keep going with it - even if you've already got the infection, it will shorten it. I also find that squeezing fresh lemon juice down my throat before going to bed works really well in conjunction with the spray to prevent the cold from developing.
