This is the short-range RGBD sensor for point cloud acquisition. Microsoft started a wave with the Kinect sensors. The MSR sensor is not very open. The Primesense sensors were open and available in volume until Appel acquired the company. There are two models, one for regular range 3-10 ft and one (this one) for short-range capture. Both are great sensors. After the Apple acquisition the best alternative is the Structure.Io sensor ,which has associated OpenNI driver support.

This works, but buy the Xtion and save $100.
This sensor was easy to get setup with OpenNI, but there is no reason to buy this instead of the ASUS Xtion. I bought both and I have yet to see a difference between the two sensors. Save 100 dollars and get the Xtion.
