Review: Bright light - Great light
Review: Absolute game-changer. This is the best of the cheapies, buy this one. - It's so very amazingly good for the price. But it's not perfect: Good: The polarization effect is shockingly powerful. It really does reveal chip markings that were nearly impossible to read by any other technique. You can hide or accentuate the shiny solder joints or the reflection from edges of traces (they curve the surface of the solder-mask ever so slightly). It's wild. Absolute game-changer. I didn't believe how good this would be until I experienced it for myself. Bad: Lack of anti-reflection coatings means there are subtle ghost reflections between the polarizer filter and the microscope's own objective. While working "live" these are super easy to ignore, but if you're taking photos (e.g. through a trinocular port), the ghosts are more noticeable and might confuse viewers. Good: Easy install, clamps to a wide range of objective sizes. I first bought a competing one that can only clip to one size (which is not my size), I sent it back and got this one. The screw tips are bare and might scratch the paint, but who cares? Good: Plenty of brightness even for scopes that go to 45x and really need a lot of light to get there. Can be turned down if you don't need all that, but even at 4.5x, it's not too much light. It's just right. Bad: Defaults to full brightness every power-on, regardless of what you had it set to at power-off. Gets pretty hot when left at high brightness for a long time. An analog control would be nicer here, but they went digital. Bad: Doesn't have an auto-off timer, so it's easy to leave it on all weekend, cooking itself in the corner... The digital control COULD've included this function but didn't, so we get the worst of both worlds. Bad: You have to push the little momentary control button thing to turn it on. If it's plugged into a switched power-strip or something, it won't come on when all the rest of the accessories do. Again, an analog control would be better here. Good: The silver ring you twist to adjust the light polarizer, moves smoothly enough. I expected this to jam and stick, but it's actually just fine. And a tiny dab of silicone lube will make it even better. Bottom line: Buy it. This is the best of the cheapies. You could do better but you'd have to spend 20x the price.

It's so very amazingly good for the price. But it's not perfect: Good: The polarization effect is shockingly powerful.
