On average it will use 8 lbs of salt and 60 gals of water per regeneration. The regeneration cycles are adjustable, so salt and water usage can very, depending on the programming.

Is a reverse osmosis system in conjunction with this system recommended?

My water comes from a well worse than city water  here in AZ. If you want to remove all the nasty stuff out of your drinking water chlorine, amonna, and all the chemical runoff from the rain that brings even more stuff that a water softener doesn't remove. This softener is awesome happy with the buy. I also added 3 carbon 10in block whole home filters I replace every 6 months after the water softener and the water is amazing.  I have a 6 stage reverse osmosis in the kitchen running through my fridge. The Di Filter in the reverse osmosis is what makes the ice cubes crystal clear. So to answer your question Yes you do because it does not remove everything out of your water. Just by adding a softener does not make your water safe it just removes most not all hard minerals. What is the footprint of the system?

The softener tank diameter is 12 inches. The salt tank is 14x14.   The footprint with the salt tank next to the softener would be approximately 26 inches. The salt tank does not have to be right next to the softener. It can be several feet away.

Is it alright to install this system outside in the yard? located down in houston, tx

Not the best location for it, but if you have it shaded it should be ok. The life of the unit will drop with having it outside
