Can I use this for tree rats? Would they be heavy enough to trigger it when they run through?

I would think so. It is a very heavy duty trap. I have primarily used it for ground squirrels, but have also trapped and killed rats. I think this is one of the best traps on the market for rodents. Also, it is very easily to dispose of the dead animal.

My dog chases squirrel and sniff out everything. Can this trap hurt her? Also once the squirrels are dead where do they go?

My dogs are not able to get into the trap or get dead squirrels out of the trap. Unless your dog is very very small, there shouldn’t be a problem. As for disposal, I unlatch the trap and dump the dead squirrel into a plastic bag and then the trash can. After that, just reset the trap and bait with some sunflower seeds, and repeat.

How or in what way does it kill them? I cannot tell from the photos.

There is a spring which consists of the rectangular bar you see on the outside of the tube. When the varmint trips the plate on the inside it releases and the bar slides forward and up quickly via the two slots in the tube. This has been Very Very effective in reducing the population. I can honestly say this trap has killed over 100 and still counting. Sometimes 3 in 1 day if I can remove and reset fast enough. I have had to modify the set piece because has become to slick to reset and hold the bar rectangular bar. Couple coats of clear nail polish did the trick for me. Hope this helps!

I feed a lot of birds - would jays weigh enough to trip the trap?

I suppose it could be possible if it's a fat jay. My thought is that birds really don't want to wander into a tube the way a rodent/squirrell does. I have many birds in my orchard and I have never had any birds enter into the trap.
