Very capable and high-quality multitool
I purchased the Surge (second-generation model, with replaceable wire-cutters) and leather pouch direct from Amazon on 21 Dec 2015 for £86.99. It arrived on time, and has exceeded my expectations. Before the Surge I had a Fuse, which I was very happy with, but I hankered after changeable bits, a saw, a file, and blades that could be opened without unfolding the multitool. My first impression of the Surge was the weight! It is much heavier than my old Fuse, but it's very well made, and is beautifully engineered. It gives you confidence that it'll tackle any job you ask without being damaged. The supplied Leatherman leather sheath is also well made, and the Surge fits perfectly. There are elasticated pockets on each side that I use to carry a small LED Lenser penlight torch and a pen. Since the pockets are open at the bottom, you have to be careful that items don't fall right through them. I have carried the Surge in its sheath on my belt every day for the last five months, and both are holding up very well indeed. The black coating on the leather has worn away in a few places, but shoe polish should fix that. The black coating on the brass pop stud has also partially worn away, but again that's an easy fix. The pop stud and belt loop still hold secure, and the leather is still good and strong. As for the Surge, nothing has broken or become loose, and everything feels just as tight as the day I got it! It gets used for a multitude of tasks, and I regularly use the plain knife, scissors, bit exchanger, large and small screwdrivers, pliers and wire-cutters; and to a lesser extent the diamond file, saw, ruler and awl. I also purchased the Bit Kit Leatherman Wave Bit Kit , and carry that in a Leatherman nylon sheath together with a small mobile phone. I had hoped that the two-card Bit Kit would fit in the leather sheath, along with the Surge, torch and pen, but it didn't. I then bought the nylon sheath, hoping they would all fit in there instead! Although everything DID fit in the nylon one, it felt too bulky, so I now wear both sheaths, with items distributed between them. In summary, I am extremely happy with my Surge, and if I lost it, or it got stolen, I would immediately go and buy another one to replace it. I have no hesitation in awarding it five stars.

Fantastic leatherman surge multi tool.
The Leatherman Surge is a multi-tool that sets a high standard for versatility and durability. With 21 tools packed into a stainless steel design, this is an essential companion for anyone tackling demanding tasks, whether it’s in the workshop, on a camping trip, or for everyday DIY needs. The stainless steel finish is both attractive and practical, offering excellent corrosion resistance. The Surge is a large tool, weighing about 12.5 ounces (335 grams), which makes it feel robust and reliable. Its full-size lockable tools ensure safe and secure operation, even for heavy-duty jobs. The Surge boasts an impressive 21 tools, including: Regular and Needlenose Pliers: Precision-made for a variety of gripping tasks. Replaceable Wire Cutters: Both hard and soft wire cutters are sharp and effective, with the added bonus of being replaceable to extend the tool’s life. Full-Size Blades: The straight and serrated blades are razor-sharp, accessible from the outside for quick deployment. Scissors: Surprisingly large and very effective, ideal for cutting paper, fabric, or even thin plastic. Blade Exchanger: A unique feature that allows you to switch out the file or saw for added flexibility. Awl, Screwdrivers, and Can/Bottle Opener: Cover all the standard bases for daily tasks. The standout feature is the one-hand opening mechanism, which makes accessing tools convenient, even when multitasking. The Surge excels in real-world use. Its pliers provide excellent grip, while the blades remain sharp after prolonged use. The wire cutters are strong enough to handle tough materials, and the scissors outperform expectations. Whether you’re cutting, prying, or tightening, this tool delivers reliable performance across the board. While its size and weight make it less pocket-friendly, the ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip during extended use. The locking mechanism for each tool adds a layer of safety, which is crucial for heavy-duty tasks. Extremely durable and well-made. Wide range of tools for various applications. Replaceable wire cutters extend the tool’s lifespan. Outside-accessible blades for quick use. Made in the USA, ensuring top-notch quality. Heavier and bulkier than other multi-tools, making it better suited for belt carry.Premium price point, though justified by its quality and performance. The Leatherman Surge is a powerhouse multi-tool designed for those who need rugged performance and reliability. While its size and weight might not suit casual users, it’s perfect for professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who values quality in their tools. It’s a long-term investment that delivers exceptional functionality and durability.

Which one do you get?
Ordered this a few days ago and it was shipped from Austria - when you buy stuff from Amazon you do not know where it is coming from. Price was £77, at time of review gone up to £85. Amazon dodgy supply chain issues aside what arrived was the new updated Surge and not the one in the picture. This uncertainty may be an issue to you, with one exception (precision screwdriver) I wasn't too bothered. Main differences are replaceable wire cutter blades in the pliers, better scissor design, better locking release on screwdrivers etc. (all tools lock, not just the knife blades), hole in the exchangeable saw blades for better seating. The one change I don't like is that the fine flat and Philips reversible eye-glass precision screwdriver has been replaced with a small flat blade driver, which is odd when you consider the removeable bits in the other handle can replicate the new blade. The bits take the the Leatherman bits from the bit kit and if you buy the extender you can use normal electric screwdriver hex bits and hex shank drill bits (unpowered of course!!). The Leather man bits are hex bits with sides shaved off to fit a slim folding profile. The build quality is excellent and this is a hefty tool, bigger and heavier than the wave or wingman. You have 2 blades, scissors and removeable saw on the outside, all locking. The saw takes T-shank jigsaw blades, I used Argos Piranha own brand ones and they fitted fine. I guess Bosch ones will fit too. It comes with a wood blade and a hacksaw / file both of which seem good quality. So I think that the new Surge is an excellent tool which I give 5 stars for. Amazon gets 2 as you don't know which one you'll get, or where it is shipped from. As I indicated above I knew the new model was out and am OK with receiving the new one, but you really ought to know what version you are buying when you part with your cash. Search You Tube for video reviews of the old and new one.

beyond my wildest expectation
OMG. This multi-tool is out of this world. The build quality is outstanding and the overall finish is fab. The leather pouch it comes with is robust and looks like it will last the lifetime of the multi-tool itself, there is a handy pocket at the front to hold spare blades and/or spare screwdriver bits, there is also an elasticated bit extension holder on the side which could also be used to hold a pencil. The four main outer blades are very sharp and solid and they lock into place securely. The saw interchanger is very good. The saw blade is sharp and cuts through wood like butter and I'm sure it could cope with branches up to three inches thick with no problem, also the interchanger is compatible with bosch saw blades, so you can get longer blades if you wish. The file for the interchanger is equally good and makes light work of smoothing small areas of wood. All the other blades and tools also lock into place reassuringly and are all easily accessed. A negative point is that the can/bottle opener is probably best only used on cans, I have found it a little tricky opening bottles and also a little too aggressive for the job, splintering the neck of the bottle on one concision. That said, this is still an excellent multi-tool and one that I would have no hesitation in recommending.

Feels like quality
Heavier than my original Leatherman but this one really can get the blade out and back in again one handed which is handy for opening boxes. The saw blade and file are replaceable and with the optional bit extender, you can use either Leathermans own bit sets or standard multi bits.

Substantial
This is a real tank of a multitool, heavy and made for hard work. The build quality is not quite up there with Leatherman's best - mine has a little play between the handles when closed that makes it rattle, a common occurrence apparently. Leatherman's finest tools are very precise and refined, I would describe this one more as solid and durable. It's a Range Rover rather than a Porsche. I like the saw blade exchanger; it's compatible with Bosch jig saw blades so replacements are cheap and you can fit a metal cutting blade if you want. Some may find it frustrating to have to swap between the saw and file blades though - the Wave has saw and file as separate tools so they're both always ready to use. Worth noting that the pictures don't quite match the sheath that I received with mine (I bought direct from Amazon, not from any of the marketplace sellers). It's the "standard" leather sheath (this one: [...] not the "premium" leather/nylon sheath that's pictured. Well worth reading the instruction sheet if you buy one of these. There's a trick to getting the scissors to lock in the open position that might not be immediately obvious, and there's also a well-hidden lanyard ring that you probably won't find without the help of the instructions!

A man tool
I was delighted to receive this tool three days before the expected date of delivery and upon opening the box I was not disappointed. I am not going to get bogged down in all the specs and the merits of one grade of stainless steel against the other, if someone is that pedantic then build your own multi tool. The leatherman surge is well constructed and you can tell it is built to last. The pliers are the best I have used on such tools and the knives are razor sharp. I was a bit iffy on the exchangeable saw and file but found they are very sturdy and easy to swap. The screwdrivers, scissors etc are of good quality and overall this is a good product. It is a bit heavy but attached to your belt you would forget about it after a while. It will not go into a rucksack on treks but rather on the hip. It can even be attached to my maxpedition falcon ll by way of molle straps. If you need a multi tool for anything then this is the one for you, sure it has a 25 year guarantee so its worth the risk. It is the yorkie bar of multi tools.

Worth the buy
Superb multi tool. This must be (at least) my 6th leatherman and I would argue the best of the ones I own (certainly at this price - £92 at time of buying). Bought this one for use at work. I broke the sidekick I previously used (by the way the leatherman warranty is fantastic - replaced no question And given to my father in law). The surge feels sturdier and more robust than the Rev, sidekick, the wingman I’ve previously owned and the wave’s I have elsewhere. Size wise it takes some getting used to but it isn’t much different to the wave in reality (certainly not as much as is made out on some reviews - that said it is personal preference). The side opening knife, scissors and file/ saw combo is a bonus and avoids the need to open the pliers to get the tool out. Knife locks are simple to operate and work well. The only things I miss with this is the jewellery screwdriver that the wave has (but there is a work round online if you look into it). And the fact you have to buy the pocket clip separately - you would expect a tool at this price to come with this.
