I had seen good things about the Arctic Fox hair dyes and really wanted something vibrant. I wasn’t disappointed. Really happy with the colour. My hair is dark so I had to bleach it first to get the best result. I used a combination of Purple Rain and Violet Dream. I thought that the bottles looked small when I got them but I had enough.

Just to note: I have always used permanent hair dye and have been coloring my hair here and there since I was 14. I'm now 47. This is my first time using a semi-permanent. I decided to try it because most vibrant colors only come in semi-permanent. So I have to say this stuff was a breeze to use. No mixing! No mess! No staining! As a precaution, I covered my floor and sink with old towels but this stuff is thicker than permanent hair dye so I didn't need to worry. I didn't drip once. I always use gloves to apply color and also use Vaseline around my face and back of neck to avoid staining of the skin so I had no problems there. I also had no issue with staining of the sink when I rinsed my hair out and there was minimal transfer to the towel I used to dry my hair when I was done. I've never had a time when I've colored my hair and didn't have any clean up afterwards so this part was fantastic! So about my hair and the color itself. I have long brown hair, not thick but not thin either, with black underneath. By long I mean middle of my back. I also should state that I do work out so I wash my hair almost daily but I always use a sulfate free, color safe shampoo and use cool/lukewarm water, never hot, and I don't use any products on my hair like gels or hairspray. I rarely ever blow dry it and only curl it on average of maybe once a week. Anyway, I've been coloring the under part of my hair black for quite some time now and the last time I did it I bought a color (permanent) that was a very dark purple to see if I could get some subtle purple highlights to it. It did work ok but faded fast and that stuff was an absolute mess to use (stained everything!). Before anyone comes out swinging about how this color won't show up on black hair, let me just state that it did for me. It won't be hugely noticeable but luckily I wasn't going for that. I only ended up needing about half the bottle (bonus is that you can save this product and use again....something you can't do with permanent color) and I left the product on for about an hour. I then rinsed it out with cool water. The results were exactly what I was looking for. The hair was still dark but you could see the purple. When out in the sun it was even more prominent. I had no transfer of color that night on my pillow from sleeping and didn't have any transfer or washout from washing it the next day. I did skip a wash day after that and then washed it again on the 3rd full day after application. This time there was a lot of color in the water from rinsing. When I towel dried my hair you could still see the purple but there is some slight fading already. It hasn't been quite a week yet and the purple is still somewhat visible, more so around the hairline, but I'm thinking it won't last too much longer. I still have some color left in the bottle so it's nice that I can redo it when I choose without having to buy more but it would be nice if it held on for a few weeks at least. We'll see. So the question is, would I buy this product again? Surprisingly, the answer is yes. It's easy to apply, there is no clean up afterwards, no staining of my bathroom, the smell is nice and I can reuse what I didn't need the first time around which makes it more cost effective than most permanent dyes that can also fade just as quickly. It doesn't make my hair feel dry and I can play with different colors without as much damage to the hair that permanents can cause. If the color ends up lasting a few more weeks, then I doubt I would ever go back to permanent hair dyes again.

As a long-term Manic Panic "hot hot pink" user, I assumed, based on the pictures here, that Violet Dream would be a longer-lasting replacement, but it's a much cooler color. It's beautiful, and so far it doesn't bleed at all, but two things are worth mentioning: 1) It will stain a standard plastic shower (get the bleach ready) 2) It smells like Welch's grape juice, which I happen to hate. I don't know if all colors smell the same, but the purples are atrocious. The pictures show a fresh dye job with VIOLET DREAM and PURPLE AF, compared to HOT HOT PINK from Manic Panic (half face, black bg).
