nostalgic or novelty and sturdy and handy
Given the size, the plastic feel might seem flimsy compared to other similarly sized 2x AA flashlights. However, next to my original MX991 model, the feel of the plastic is very similar for my version. The switch is no rivetted in, but held with screws and may be more serviceable down the line. The original equipped bulbs are good. Consider an upgrade of a Dorcy 3 volt LED bulb makes it far better. It may not have much of a reflector to deliver a more uniformed cone of light, but it delivers a usable hot spot and a very usable perimeter wash of light.

Great Price - Better With An LED Bulb!
Had thought of ordering the full-sized (D-cell) version, but saw this, and found out it uses a standard PR6 incandescent (same as the D-cell version). Since I had a spare Dorcy 41-1643 LED replacement for the PR6, I decided to take a chance. Decent little flashlight, just as it came, though I don't expect the AA batteries would last long with the incandescent bulb. Though I wondered if LED would pair well with the reflector focal length, they work beautifully, together. Focused, bright white light. Can't speak to durability, yet, but it seems well made. Very happy.

Exactly what I need
Review for Rothco Mini Army Style Flashlight, Olive Drab ($8.19 with free shipping). This flashlight has slightly warm natural light so as to have less of a hindering effect on the natural release of melatonin, and to keep the eyes adjusted to the dark. I don't like red light because it makes it hard to see what I'm doing (and creeps me out while I'm camping), while bright white light is too harsh, so this flashlight is a happy medium. It also comes with a yellow, blue, green, and red filter (I don't know what purpose the blue and green might serve). I did not see a replacement bulb built into it, as claimed by the description. Am I missing something? I don't need a replacement bulb, and it would just add extra bulk, but even so, it is blatant false advertisement, so I removed a star for that reason. Unlike many headlamps, this flashlight clips to a belt or backpack strap so as to create angled shadows to more easily spot tripping hazards, and it doesn't shine directly into the eyes of whoever I'm facing. I like that this one doesn't have all the fancy magnets, motion sensors, and million lumens to blind anyone in a mile radius. Magnets collect dirt-like ferrous material, they stick to metal things unintentionally, and they have the potential to destroy certain electronics and the magnetic strip on credit cards. I find it annoying that all the other angled flashlights have a magnet on the bottom. I don't need a magnetic flashlight while camping or during a power out. The other thing is the batteries. More and more headlamps and angled flashlights are scrapping the batteries in place of an integrated battery and charging port. For a backpacking trip, I prefer carrying a couple extra AAs rather than a whole expensive charging port and cord. Plus, charging ports can run out of charge in the cold, whereas I've not had this problem with batteries. (I have not tested this claim with precision.) This review is long-winded not only to inform prospective buyers, but also because I hope it reaches other flashlight companies to make a competitive flashlight that meets and improves upon certain practical needs. I've been searching for this damn thing for too long.

For play only
Works well so far, but seems pretty cheaply made. Not very bright at all, but OK for a toy

A very good quality low-lumen flashlight for a bargain price.
This is a nice little flashlight for close at hand tasks. It's not very bright, especially with the colored lenses in place, but it's great for times when you just need a little illumination for a project. I use it at work to fix equipment that my patients are wearing while they sleep. It's bright enough for me to do what needs done, but not so bright to wake them or hurt their eyes. (unless it was pointed right at their face) It's nice to be able to clip it to my shirt and have both hands free to work, and it's not over-kill like most head-mounted lights I've come across. The plastic housing seems to be strong and durable, yet nice and light weight. It also does not appear to be a battery hog, which is a plus.

Nostalgia purchase but better.
I was issued the full sized one of these in Boot camp but lost it many years ago. This was a nostalgia purchase that I wanted to make practical. I purchased some upgraded light bulbs and rechargeable batteries. It still kind of sucks like most military gear but it's better than it was and certainly a useable flashlight. Substantially smaller than the military issued one. Also, it was dirt cheap.

This flashlight is lightweight & waterproof
Good quality AA battery flashlight. It takes easy to find PR6 replacement incandescent bulbs available at most car auto parts stores. This is a soft color light that has the same appearance as the flame of a candle. This flashlight is also lighter weight and more waterproof than a MiniMag AA flashlight. If you want this flashlight to be much brighter then replace it's original incandescent lightbulb with the Nite Ize 74 lumens LED. I use ENERGIZER Lithium AA batteries in this flashlight. These Lithium batteries are noticeably lighter than the alkaline AA batteries.

Bought it for my son. He is 2 years old and afrade of the dark. Wanted something that wouldn't blind him. This light is perfect. He also loves the color changing disc's that come with it. I recommend this product.
