Q: Is this audio responsive?

Mine is. If the big part of the cord is exposed and you hit the remote to level one at the bottom left corner, it is very much audio responsive and very cool

Q: Does it turn on when plugged in? I would like to control with a smart plug if possible.

Yes. When plugged in, in turns on.

Q: Mine freezes after about 5 minutes. Won't respond to the app, won't respond to the remote either. Any way to fix bedsides unplugging it?

Mine does not have that issue UNLESS another remote runs on the same frequency. (Think remote battery operated candles) When it does happen, you MUST unplug the unit at the wall outlet end. Unplugging the short, easy to get to part does not reset the chip that runs the unit. Hope this helps

It uses a USB A as it's power so any adapter from most phones or USB powered devices will work
