Fantastic functionality. Short battery life, overheating.
Yep it's pricey, and the weather subscription is also pricey. But it is an invaluable add to the flight deck for any pilot. The battery life is subpar for any full day of flying. It'll stay charged for a full length leg, but then it needs a big charge or add another cable to the dashboard for it. Also, very susceptible to overheating for functional placement. Plan on purchasing a breathable cover of some kind to protect against it but retain signal strength. I use a small sun shade.

No XM Weather
Got the GDL 52, green SXM light, subscription shows as “Pilot Preferred”, get XM music, but no XM weather data. Don’t care about music… SiriusXM Aviation support was good, the regular SiriusXM support was a disaster. Now waiting on Garmin Aviation to reply… but very disappointed. Would expect a $1,300 device to work as expected and expect that Garmin would test each device before sending it out.

More reliable than the GDL-39D
I've only had this for a couple weeks, but so far the GDL 52 is much more reliable than the GDL 39D I had before it. The GDL 39D constantly dropped the connection to the satellites and to the iPad, so attitude information as sketchy, at best. The GDL 52 has yet to drop the connection. I did notice, however, that the 52 attitude information takes a while to catch up with the actual attitude. If you level out, for example, the 52 will take a while to return the attitude indicator to level flight.

Charging port broke
Works great! But!!! Huge but! I like another poster have found that the USB port broke off! I'm just straight up returning this unit. Too expensive of a unit to have a cheap break

Working great thus far.
Product working great so far when charged. However, I'm not sure the device charges at the same time of being on. Appears you must turn it off to charge. Not sure if being connected to a charging block and on at the same time will work. I will test this again.

Garmin product not so good customer assistance...
A function was not working on my unit (power saver function), called Garmin but they were no help....as usual!Garmin makes great product but this unit seemed to be defective on the power saver function; I was going to sent it back, but used it a few time in the aircraft and all other functions seemed to work well, I can live with one small function not working, just wished Garmin had been more receptive to my problem. Also, today tried to pair a Bluetooth headset (lightspeed AV 200) and could not get it to work, don't know if its the GDL 52 or my Aera 796; the Aera says 'already at capacity for paired devices' and I only have the GDL connected?

Battery fried
I’ve had it 3 years and the battery is dead, it won’t charge and it won’t turn on. Now it’s a $1,200 paperweight.

Works as described
Sirrius Antenna has to behind Glas, open view. Reset needed ones since in use. Sirius proposed a $250 credit with the voucher - waiting for two month now to get something back. Not Garmin fault.
