Absolute max opening is 1.059”. Essentially 1”.

Can this tool be used to measure the dimensions of gemstones set in a bracelet?

It’s probably not the right tool, especially for gems, as it’s accuracy is ‘iffy’ at best. This is also more for measuring the thickness of a piece, rather than the geometry of a piece. All of my mitutoyo “expensive gauges’ read the same, and every other cheap caliper I own reads something “close”. This is great for “pretty close” type work, but not for precision measurement.

Are the tips sharp? I want to use to measure my dog's lumps; I'd like something better than body fat calipers. Verniers take too long.

The tips are round balls, approximately 0.1"D. Maximum measurement on mine is 1.047" (NOT 1.062") Hope this helps.
