Elon Musk

Read Isaacson's book on Steve Jobs, which was fantastic, so decided to read this one on Musk because of that. I started reading this with a negative view of Musk, he just rubs me up the wrong way, so i decided to read this to give him a chance to prove me wrong. You have to see both sides of the coin before you can formulate an opinion and I can say I started with an open mind. I really tried to see things from his point of view. I totally get that any successful person has to be single minded, dedicated, focused, blunt and ruthless. To be fair that is why their billionaires and I'm not. I really liked at Tesla he put the designers in the factories, next to the production line so they saw the impact of their design and how it could be improved. About halfway through the book the tone changes when Isaacson stops telling the story and starts shadowing Musk and reporting what he heard and saw, that the facade that Musk created falls away. At the beginning of the book he talks about being bullied at school, feel sorry for him, but by the end of the book his bullying of people is common place, what a hypocrite. That type of thing. Ripping all the Twitter servers out of a datacentre and moving them on trucks to prove he was right, never mind the damage and loss of service ?!?!? That was idiotic. So I read the book with an open mind, so now I have data points on why I dont like the man. In fact the best quote is by Isaacson himself; I paraphrase, does his drive excuse his bad behaviour, his callousness, his recklessness? The answer is no of course not. So fantastic book, interesting subject, learned a great deal and I will NEVER, EVER buy a Tesla. I would not give that man a penny of my money.

Grade: A Difficulty level: straightforward to read, just a long book I thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning more about the greatest entrepreneur of our time. I learned what made him the man he is, what drives such a high performer, and the trade-offs that come with it. What inspired me the most about this book is how polymathic Musk is, knowing so much about so many different fields, yet combining them in highly profitable & synergistic ways. To this day, he runs 6 companies at once, compared to the likes of Steve Jobbs, who reached a max of 3. The author, Walter Isaacson, also wrote the biographies of Steve Jobbs, Da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin, so he knows a thing or two about creating a quality biography that’s raw and honest. He had interviewed and spent lots of time with Musk and the people who’ve known him all his life over many years, getting a level of unfiltered insight that seemed as if he’d been a close companion of Musk his whole life. Musk wasn’t allowed to interfere or read the biography until it was finished, which was great, as his controlling nature would have undoubtedly wanted changes, or at moments wanted to be painted in a different light. I also learned more about how the sins of the Father can have a deep impact on people, causing them to display some of the undesirable traits themselves. Overall, great read. Musk stands as one of the top 3 pioneers of the world at present, and we’re lucky to have such a man with such responsibility, due to his deep concern for the future of humanity, and being one of the individuals doing the most to save it.

This guy is crazy but inspiring!

Walter Isaacson was given privileged access to his subject and it shows. This is a detailed , absorbing biography of a complex , driven man. The book is divided into small sections which makes it easy to read and makes you want to learn more. I began by wondering why a man would want to be worth billions. But that is not what Elon Musk is about at all. He eats junk food, has no sense of fashion and is as likely to sleep on the factory floor as in a 5* hotel. Musk is determined to make the differences he believes in and the human suffering that entails is of no consequence to him. But he can be right and he certainly makes a difference. Of course the book lacks another chapter- his time as an extra member of the Trump family and the inevitable emotional falling out Good use of photographs to head each chapter. How often as children have we said when reading history that we wished we’d been able to travel back in time to see famous people of those era? Well, guess what, we don’t need to do any such thing as right now we are living through incredible times thanks to the research and innovations of one man; Elon Musk. Whether it is neural links, personal robots, self driving cars, bore hole or battery technology etc etc etc, you’ll find the name Musk at the head of world leading technology and innovation. This book though covers not just the present but is incredibly humbling to read. because it covers Elon’s upbringing and struggles etc before he ever became famous. Musk is an astonishing man, and his life story is equally remarkable to read. I just couldn’t put the book down and was blown away by the sheer audacity and scale and speed of Elon’s transformation from a young boy and into the world’s richest and most innovative individual who, by the way, intends getting the human species to start colonising other planets (Mars) within our lifetime. I thoroughly recommend this book - and in particular to anyone who has children or has a dream and wishes to make the absolute most of their life and career options as our planet hurtles through space and into the most incredible future imaginable.
