No it is not a stupid question. I got confused too in the beginning. You use the gray (rough) side of the pad. The headlight looks little hazy after the application. But the spray brings the shine back.

I used this last night without realizing it will rain today. Directions on the spray says to wait 24 hours before exposing to water. Am I in trouble?

If it looks fine you should be fine. The 24 hour recommendation is very conservative to cover all environments and situations. If it dried for a few hours it may be totally fine.

how many headlight lenses does this kit work for?

This kit is designed to restore the headlights of 1-2 vehicle (2-4 headlights) of course results can vary quite a bit depending on the condition of the headlights and application technique of any given user. That being said, It is not uncommon to get even more mileage out of this kit.
