Can this be kept outside?

It is not designed for permanent outdoor use, but works great for outdoor events. It can, however, be kept in a garage setting as it is made with all plastic content and is easily cleaned. The label sleeves on the top of the bins are only sealed on 3 sides to allow the collection item labels to be changed over time, thus the labels are not 100% protected from rain or storms.

Why does it say not for residential use?

Thanks for your question. We have found most residential recyclers are looking for something smaller and more "residential looking". Generally once you get larger than the typical 13 gallon kitchen size units the manufacturing and shipping cost are much higher. We have found many residential buyers are expecting high end materials for bargain prices. While we do sell many units to residential users, our materials, design & size are focused for the school and office market.

Do the bins separate for easier emptying?

Yes. There is a common lid/base for the Double & Triple units. The bins are designed with no bottom. To empty, tie the bag and lift the light bin off (vs. lifting a heavy bag). No "vacuum effect" and any spills get caught in the easy to clean base pan.
