## Description

A New York Times Best Seller! An desertcart Best Book of the Month! A "raucous trip through the odd corners of our alphabet." — The New York Times Let's get real—the English language is bizarre. A might be for apple, but it's also for aisle and aeons. Why does the word "gnat" start with a G but the word "knot" doesn't start with an N? It doesn't always make sense, but don't let these rule-breaking silent letters defeat you! This whimsical, funky book from Raj Haldar (aka rapper Lushlife) turns the traditional idea of an alphabet book on its head, poking fun at the most mischievous words in the English language and demonstrating how to pronounce them. Fun and informative for word nerds of all ages!

P is for Pteradactyl: the Worst Alphabet Book Ever is an open invitation to children who don't like to read, or don't feel comfortable spelling. It points out many of the bizarre words in English - words that break all of the spelling rules. Children reading - or, better yet, being read - this book will be likely to dissolve in giggles after about the third or fourth page, and laugh even more uproariously with each page turn. I have recommended it to several teachers, particularly those teaching Special Education, all of whom have told me the kids loved it! Often, children who are having a difficult time reading, or who have older siblings who tease them for their struggles to learn to read, develop a dislike for the long list of "rules" involved in English words. The rule-breaking words in this book give them a chance to have fun with something unexpected, and may even give them a way to surpass their teasing siblings in properly pronouncing (and maybe, eventually, spelling) words that are not at all "right." Aunts and Uncles, Grandmas and Grandpas, I heartily urge you to buy this book for your learning reader - and, if possible, read it to them. I believe this sort of fun with words will restore their interest in reading, and their joy in their own mastery, as they look for still more rule-breaking words in other books.
