Epiphone Dobro Hound Dog Round Neck Resonator, Vintage Brown

I was a little skeptical about buying an instrument through Amazon but I decided to take a chance. It didn't come with a case so I was worried it would get destroyed in shipping but it came double boxed and the guitar itself and the inner box was wrapped with bubble wrap, it was absolutely fine. I bought this to replace my broken Regal resonator guitar (which cost more than this) and was expecting to have to do a setup on it but it plays perfectly, although the string gauge seems a little heavier than what I use but it plays great, the action is a little high but is setup perfect for bottleneck slide. I'm sure a tweak of the truss rod would lower the action if needed. It's a short scale length which makes it pretty comfortable to play. I guess if I had one complaint it's that it doesn't have a cutaway like my old Regal but I knew that going in, although this guitar seems to have better tone than my Regal so maybe the cutaway takes away from the tone. This is a steal for $250, about half the pice of Guitar Center or other online dealers.

This was a beautiful looking guitar but I returned it. The strings seemed a little loosey goosey & the sound was not very amplified. Unfortunately, these are made in China. Sorry but you cannot get quality in an instrument that is being mass produced. Way over priced.

I bought this guitar as a birthday present for my boyfriend. He is an avid guitar player and being he already owned several acoustic guitars and electric as well I figured it was time for him to add a steel guitar to his collection.... he almost fell over when he opened this and saw his new Dobro..... this guitar was packaged impeccably and I received it ahead of time. not a single complaint.

Bought a factory blemish. It needed minor setup after purchase but was a great deal on a beuatiful guitar.

Bought this for my g/f who plays multiple string instruments in a band. She was quite pleased with the exception of it needing a more substantial bridge to improve sound quality which became apparent after she and a fellow band member played a few numbers. She plans to have the bridge replaced and with that I drop the rating down to a 4.

After playing 2 of these, then ordering one for myself I concluded these are garbage. I've been playing guitar and slide guitar since the early 70's. I've played many good and bad guitars. This dobro is bad. For starters, it's not a Dobro in any sense. It's a shabby Chinese box with a spider cone stuck in it. I ordered one from an online dealer, the neck was FAT, the neck was misaligned so the strings didn't even have an angle at the bridge and the strings were not even on the neck. The high E was further from the edge of the neck than the low E. I sent it back. The next one I received had a crack between the heel and the body, a crooked logo on the peghead, A super thin horribly assymetrically sanded neck, and a big dent in the back of the neck. It went back too. On all 4 of these that I played, the sound seemed to be buried or sunk into the body somehow. There are much better resonator guitars out there, soundwise, and certainly better built. You may have read good reviews on these, but I bet if you were to have an Epiphone Dobro in your hands and look a little closer, you'd find a few things wrong in one minute. I can only imagine what's going on inside these guitars, given the cheap and haphazard construction visible on the outside. I wanted this to be a nice guitar, I like the color and the overall look. But I'm afraid to say I had bad luck with these clunkers.

This is the best sounding mid-price range Dobro I have ever found. I had mine for about 10 years and played it almost every day. I am old finger picker, but I was always curious about slide and saw the Houndog hanging in a music store and decided to try it out. They also had a Deluxe model as I recall, but the extra $200 was more than I was willing to go at the time. After about six returns to the store and some price research and review reading on the net, I decided to buy it. No regrets!I lowered the action a bit, but that's all. It is mellower in sound than the metal bodies (and certainly lighter weight!). It has a good sustain and a nice balance of range. I found it sounded best with at least medium gauge strings. I tried light gauge, but they sounded a bit thin. You need the heavier strings to get the deeper bass sound out of that cone. Mine had a passive Fishman pick up which I hardly ever used. When playing larger venues I usually mic'd it with a Shure PG81 or the Shure PG48. I play finger pick, flat pick and slide. It has aged very well and I have had no troubles with it.I recommend this model for anyone looking for a great sounding resonator at a bargain price. To get a better sound you would have to pretty much pay at least double. I give it 5 stars as a mid-price range instrument.

This seems to be a good quality musical instrument.Nice rich sound.Thin neck profile, easy for smaller hand to play.Its a keeper...
