THIS IS THE CORRECT WAY TO USE THIS DEVICE
When you are on the INSIDE of your property, you use the SLIDING CHAIN when answering the door to strangers. (If you have un-chained the door for the day, the chain should be hanging DOWN underneath the locking device so you can re-chain the door if strangers arrive and you want to be safe). NEVER EVER use the key to open the chain from the inside in the event of an emergency because the device was not designed for this and you may be putting yourself at risk if you need to vacate your property in a hurry.When you are on the OUTSIDE of the property (eg if you need to go from the front of the house round the side to show the gas man where the meter is), this is when you click the chain into the locking device so it unlocks from the outside. When you want to gain entry from the outside, you swivel the locking device so the keyhole is visible, insert the key and turn it until the chain pops out, thereby giving entry to your property.This is a German lock and my German/Austrian family have used them for well over 50 years so do be assured this is the correct way to use them. I'm thinking of buying a white one for my conservatory door now.

Cannot open from inside without key
Had not realised you need to use key to open it from inside as well as from outside. We like to leave the chain on all the time and only open door when we have checked who is there. Keychains we had previously could be slid open from inside without a key - much simpler when answering door. Also, with this design you would have a problem getting out of the door in an emergency if you had mislaid the key. This was not obvious until rigid plastic packaging had been cut open - then could not return as opened.

Going on holiday, you can lock the door chain on departing
What I like about this lockable door chain is that one can lock the door chain as one exits, thus making it more difficult for Burglars to try and kick open the door, also, preventing them from leaving via the front door as if they were guests, or to whatever door you decide to use the lock on. This lockable door chain is way more sturdy than the usual common garden door chains.
