This is a beautiful book, photos and text . it takes the reader on a visit to the Museum in Cairo, to see artifacts never exhibited, and it details the entire history of excavations in Egypt. A great reference book. Mr. Hawass is a bit partial to the Egyptian historians and researchers, but he also gives the foreign ones their due success and contributions to the Ancient History of Egypt. And he is accurate in his reports . This book is a great addition to any Egyptologist library, and at the same time, an attractive and instructing book to the general public .

This is a fine book by Dr. Hawass. In coffee table format, the succinct history of egyptology up to present times, plus a choice selection of often never before seen pictures of artifacts, are woven together with great skill. My only disappointment concerns the limitation that was evidently put on how big the book could be. Clearly there is much, much more that could be shown and Dr. Hawass would be the man for it. Hopefully one day he will be able to an immense volume concerning his long standing love affair with his country's origins. There is no greater authority on the subject!

I've never been a fan of Zahi Hawass; he always struck me as a pompous ass, but this book is absolutely beautiful. The objects shown are interesting and show the full flower of ancient Egyptian culture, and they are beautifully photographed Highly recommended.

Once again Dr. Zahi Hawass has written a book that obviously comes from not just his superior mind, but also from his heart. His love and understanding of Ancient Egypt is unmatchable. I have not only become a collector of everything Egyptian but also everything Hawass!

Zai Hawass did an excellent job on this book with much information and great pictures! I would recommend this book for any one interested in Egyptology!!

THIS BOOK IS GREAT SOURCE MATERIAL. DID YOU EVER WONDER HOW THE EGYPTAINS CAME UP WITH SO MANY MASTERWORKS IN ART AND ARCHITECTURE. THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL TO SATISFY ONE'S WONDER?!!

Sad. I read the reviews and expected better, instead, the book is: first half - "treasures" from the basement of the Cairo museum which are in the basement simply because they aren't that spectacular, and, second half: all about Hawass. While his books tend to have great photos, mostly because of his access, his writing is all the same - it's all about what a great Egyptilogist he is and how much he does for his field. Sadly, he discredits all foreign work in Egypt, dismisses the idea that foreign investment was critical to early discovery (he claims artifacts were stolen by foreigners when the concession agreements, granted by Egypt in return for large sums of money clearly divided the finds between Egypt and the excavator), and most strikingly discredits Howard Carter's work. He states, among other things, that Carter sold media rights to the London Times, clearly known to be the work of Carvarvon, and that Carter "did, in fact" steal items from the tomb. The body of common knowledge says otherwise, and Hawass knows that. Never another book with his name on it...

All the objects are well known examples and some of the photos of the objects are a little bizarre - they look like more that the photographer was going for an "artsy" look. Considering that Egyptian sculpture is based on the concept of "frontality" (sculpture is supposed to be viewed head-on for its position in tombs or temples to receive offerings), this is a bit skewed in its presentation. Simply put, just buy the full catalog version of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo as the write-ups of individual pieces are of better quality than Z.H.'s.

i bought this book for my husband,his comments on this book he says it describes about all of the hidden treasures at the cairo museium, which were hidden in the basement rooms under the museium there are lots of treasures that have not been seen before, it is very well photographed and very well described,this is a very interesting book to read, would strongly recommend this book,so if your intereresting in egyptian history you will be supprised what you read in this book100% recommend a must to read.

I am a great admirer of Zahi Hawass and while I do not agree about some of the things he tries to inform us about the construction of the Pyramids he is perhaps the greatest man ever for promoting the greatest wonders the world has ever seen. Most of his books are truly wonderful. As one who has led many groups to Egypt I feel as if I have returned to the places of my passion when I see the wonderful photographs in his books. However this book is rather like a hap hazard compendium of various items from the mask of Tutankhamen to odds and ends of mild interest from various places. It is a book of objects, often well photographed BUT sadly the book did nothing for me as the majority of things can be found in his other books. It also appears to have no real chronological order to the items as Tut omes before Hetaperies!!!! 3 stars for the quality of the pictures of the pictures
