DNA Repair And Mutagenesis

This tome, while a reasonably complete expose of current science regarding DNA repair, is, perhaps, less than a comprehensive, easily understood discussion of the subject. It is OK as a reference source but certainly not for light bedtime reading.I'll explain. I believe that part of a good teacher's excellence is his ability to make a complex subject comprehensible to his students. Certainly, a reader can criticize my criticism in claiming that this subject is sooooo complex as to defy simplification. I completely disagree and aim to prove it. I believe that a tome of this sort can be reduced to two forms of information and data: 1. to put theory and data into a comprehensive form. 2. to place complex data into a more detailed form.I think the authors attempted this by placing a summary at the end of each chapter. This is commendable and routine but, in my opinion, inadequate. It is science for the initiated but, as a reasonably well-read pathologist, I really think I should be able to follow the discussion without excessive difficulty. Naively, perhaps, I regard this as more the authors' problem than my problem.Braithwaite

Excellent text on the subject matter.

The first edition of this book was published in 1995 and it was noted then that this was a field that was rapidly progressing. Progress has not slowed, and for the past several years the authors, now expanded to five, have been reviewing, re-writing where necessary, and expanding the book to nearly double it's original size with nearly double the number of illustrations.As a textbook, this volume is suitable for the advanced undergraduate and graduate students. As a reference book, this volume is the most complete survey of the field to date. It is excellent in its historical approach that illustrates how the present state of knowledge was reached. This provides a background understanding that sometimes opens the door to other types of research that might be conducted. There is further a series of comments on the directions that current research is going. Each chapter is heavily referenced, with 10,000 references to back up the content of the book.This is the definite book on the subject.

This book is absolutely the most comprehensive and well written book in this field. The pictures are astounding, and the layout is superb. The whole book is great but, the chapters written by G. C. Walker are particularly enlightening. Anyone with even a mild intrest in DNA Repair and or Mutagenesis should purchase this book with utmost haste.

Excelente livro para se ter como material de consulta e sobre o básico de determinadas áreas. Como todas as áreas da ciência, muito já se avançou, e muitas das coisas nele estão mais detalhadas ou forma descritas sobre outras visões hoje em dia. Mas para quem quer ter um local para ir atrás da base; quem está começando; quem precisa organizar alguma disciplina ou algo do tipo, vale muito a pena. Com o lembrete de sempre ter em mente que além desta leitura é necessária uma atualização sobre o tópico. Comprei quando iniciei meu mestrado e me ajudou bastante a organizar a forma de estudar. Ainda mais porque é realmente útil quando se precisa achar alguma referência de algum trabalho clássico.
