There is very good software for Mac OSX too! Called QXScope, it is available at http://www.edhsw.com/qxscope/

Can this be used as a regular microscope without plugging in to a computer?

It does not work as a regular optical microscope. There is no eyepiece. The video is output through a USB cable. Also, the computer must be running Windows XP or 2000. It software to control it does not run on windows 7, 8 or 10.
