Can I use this to cut wood branches or roots?

You're on the right track but what you really want for those roots and branches and even small trees is a reciprocating saw with a wood blade. This one is available today on Amazon for $88.24 with free shipping: DEWALT Bare-Tool DC385B 18-Volt Cordless Reciprocating Saw.  Don't waste time trying to cut roots and limbs with a grinder/cutter - but that is a nice tool to have in your box.

Is this grinder compatible with a DC9098 18v battery

This tool is compatible with all Dewalt 18 volt batteries. They will all fit this tools base. That said as this tool is fairly power hungry the higher capacity batteries give longer run times. The Dewalt 9096 XRP which I believe you might have meant works well as does the Dewalt DC9181 XRP lithium. Both these XRP batteries have about the same run times which are 50-100% longer than the smaller batteries. Once again any 18 volt Dewalt battery will work and make the tool run. My experience with this tool and these batteries is that this tool uses plenty of juice- like the cordless saws and is best served with the use of the higher amp/hour rated batteries. Even then expect to be charging batteries often when using this tool for continuous grinding purposes. I love this tool- it's very handy but if I have a lot of work to do and power is available a corded tool is often the way to go just like with the cordless saws. I often times use two chargers and four batteries simultaneously when using these tools for a full days job - otherwise I run out of charged batteries. - they can't be charged as fast as the tool uses them.

No. This uses a disc with about a 1 inch hole in the center. I know the disc witt the 5/8 X 11 thread it does not fit.
