Starring Academy Award(R) winner Helen Mirren (Best Actress, THE QUEEN, 2006), produced by Steven Speilberg, Oprah Winfrey and Juliet Blake, and directed by Lasse Hallström (CHOCOLAT), this uplifting story bursts with flavor, passion and heart. When the chilly chef proprietress of a Michelin-starred French restaurant in southern France (Mirren) gets wind of a culinary immigrant opening an Indian restaurant just 100 feet from her own, her icy protests escalate to all-out war between the two establishments. It's a celebration of triumph over exile as these two worlds collide and one young man tries to find the comfort of home in every pot -- wherever he may be. Review: Great movie worthy of repeat watching - Such a great movie, entertaining and uplifting. The acting is exceptional and the storyline sweet if barely plausible. I watched it 3 times so far and it's one of my favorites along with Chef. Great price and it arrived on time. Review: What a delightful movie! - I'm a sucker for a good rom-com, and this certainly fit the bill. It has drama, romance, comedy, and everything you could want for a Saturday night movie with a big bag of popcorn. I love it. In fact, now I need to go watch it again!

A joy for all five senses!
Yes,yes, I loved it as I watched it several times over(5)because it made me feel warm and good inside for the first time in a very long time where films are concerned and I have watched the very best of what's on Amazon. I watch mostly Christian films but since there are not very many of them, I do switch over to some secular films that are not filled with trash talk, the V word and sex. This one was recommended to me by Amazon because of my history of NOT wanting garbage on my Kindle. Anyway, this was wonderful. I loved Helen Mirren as the pretty-older french owner of a small restaurant in the south of France called Sol Plural (Many suns?). Along comes an East Indian family from Mumbai and watch out....the sparks fly literally. I laughed. I cried. It was pure pleasure and pure joy. I found that the pigeon and truffle dish Madame Mallory served the Minister was a brain child of the author/writer Diane Cabaldon from her book Voyager. Yes, she actually made up that dish for her book. I found a blog called Island Vittles who made this dish in her kitchen but did not say how it really tasted. It was made with quail since she could not find any pigeons in her Canadian province of Pender, BC.( I think that's right?) But as for the food, well, I went out and bought as many spices as I could so I could cook Tamil Indian food. Just not the urchin dish. Something with coriander (cilantro) and curry and some garam masala tossed in at the end. It's called layering. It was an adventure into a new culture for me and I came out really happy. I have always liked French quisine but it is too rich and unhealthy so vegetarian Tamil cooking is more to my liking so I am delighted. Lots of fresh veggies and no meat....hold the sea urchins. French food centers around meats, sauces and small amounts of veggies or so it seemed in the movie. I could go on and on about what I loved about this film, the lighting, the music; oh! that wonderful music by R. A. Rahan! What a master of sound! He is the best in the world. Just the best ever. Buy the sound track, you won't be sorry. And I just want to mention in passing that the leading male actor Manish Dayal (Hasan Kadam). He is the most handsome man I can ever remember seeing in films of late. He is so, so gorgeous. I mean whoa......well enough. I highly recommend this film to those who love food and good music. I wish I could give it 10 stars. Congratulations to the directors of this marvelous movie. Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey were two I recognized who produced it. I was happy to see their names in the rolling credits. Great job! Keep them coming O-girl.

Feel good film
Engaging film with some charm and a few surprises along the way. It came recommended to us by a neighbor (a senior citizen bachelor). It's appropriate for family viewing and tells an uplifting story about never giving up despite the odds, and how family and close friendships that form along your way supersede the glory of stardom. I would not call this worthy of repeat viewing (yet our neighbor who recommended it has watched it 4 times. Of course he loves experimenting in the kitchen so maybe that was the big draw.) If you like movies with a culinary theme another film worth seeing is "Burnt" with Bradley Cooper in the starring role. It does though have a lot of tense moments and is not appropriate for younger children.

Physical disc and case were fine, no problems. The film was a pleasant surprise to us because we had not seen or heard of it although we are fans of Helen Mirren. It is a gentle, heartwarming story about caring, community, and embracing our differences. Might be an allegory that is much needed in today's more intolerant political environment. The plot is somewhat predictable, but the acting, sets, and dialogue are well worth the viewing.

This is one of the best movies I have seen in years. I saw at theater and then went and bought it in BluRay. Except for Helen Mirren the actors are little known to most movies goers. They were all excellent.(All)!! The story visually and verbally mixes and measures as if a good recipe in your own kitchen. It reminds us that the most important and most memorable things in our gift of time on earth are Family, Community, and all the things like culinary cuisine that bring us together in the search for belonging, respect and accomplishment. I was moved and rewarded by this movie. Watch it with your family as it will ground you and help bring your family to a place of understanding what value really is. Eating is an everyday necessity but it is one of the few things that no matter how rich or poor, no matter where or who you are, no matter what your beliefs or lack of them allows you to be at one with the earth and our Universe.
