The Ghost in the Shell Vol. 1

This brief review pertains specifically to the newly-released hardcover edition of "The Ghost in the Shell" by Kodansha Comics. I have owned and read all versions of the English language versions of this remarkable work. This edition has a nice heft and feel for a graphic novel that has been bound as a hardcover. Although, this is predominately black and white there are a number of colored pages. The colors, in comparison to other editions, are bright, and appropriate (no under or over coloration when required).Shirow's footnotes are here as well as his afterward. One of the questions that many would like to have answered is whether or not the original content that was censored has been restored. It has NOT. This edition is consistent with the later Dark Horse editions that featured panels that had been reworked by Shirow. Other than the perpetuation of this alteration, this is remains and entertaining and thought-provoking work on the impact of cyberspace and technology on humanity.For those who are new to the media universe of Ghost in the Shell, prepare yourself for various and vastly different imagining of Kusanagi Motoko and her associates. Shirow's Kusanagi has a sense of humor and is fallible. Oshii, the first to interpret her for the screen in two movies (Ghost in the Shell and Innocence), gave us a contemplative and duty-driven Kusanagi. Between the first movie and second, Production IG would bring us two television series, GiTS:SAC and GiTS:SAC 2nd Gig. The GiTS Kusanagi would show up a 3rd time in the movie, SAC: Solid State Society. Following Oshii's second movie and Solid State Society, Production IG brought out a reboot called Arise. Arise featured a younger Kusanagi at the end of her military career and beginning of her transition to Public Security and Section 9. Arise had two seasons and a follow on movie. And now, we await Kusanagi 6.0. (Oh, I forgot, Shirow wrote a series called Ghost in the Shell: Man-Machine Interface). I'll leave it to you to delve into this highly compelling universe..."The net is vast."

Magnificent artwork. Sci-fi, cyberpunk references.

Ghost and shell is probably the greatest cyberpunk story of the 20th century. Takes the ideas of Blade Runner several steps forward, And it is actually not a dystopia like most cyberpunk. Just a specialized police force, trying to deal with cyborg related crimes. Great action, great ideas and great humor, what’s the movie and the TV series misses out on.The only thing I didn’t like about this print version was the color pages are a bit dark and muddy.

You won't believe how big is the Ghost in the Shell universe until you take your time to read this story.It's divided in short stories from which the movies and animes took inspiration from. Each story tell us in vast detail what a cyberpunk world is like, going as far as using footnotes to not just describing things, but also providing insight to the scientific basis for most of the ideas in the stories. It makes it very convincing. It also helps explain a lot of plot holes in the original movie.Totally a good read, and an amazing piece for your collection.

Maybe it's because I watched the movie before reading the manga, but The Ghost in the Shell seemed a little more light hearted then I expected. However that does not mean that this graphic novel does not live up to expectations. It's a great read and an intermediate one at that. Intermediate due to the tech jargon of Masamune's 21st century can be a pain to get through. If you are a fan of cyberpunk, anime or just a fan of graphic novels, this is a must.

i love ghost in the shell, and i loved this product. the book itself is a good read (if you like manga) and i finished it in a week. its a sturdy book and becuase of it size amazon makes sure to send it well protected. i got it here fast and in great condition (no scratches or tears). i recommend this to anyone who is a ghost in the shell fan

I have seen the animated series and movies before I read this book.The manga series is very different, but very good.If you've seen anything about Ghost in the Shell and you liked it, buy this book.If you haven't seen anything yet, but you like complex police plots and fast action, you might like this one.

Esta increíble este Manga, desde que vi la película del 95 hace un par de años quedé encantado. Tiene páginas gruesas y algunas a color que se ven increíbles.En cuanto al paquete venía sin plástico protector y tiene una par de daños si te importa mucho lo estético deberás tomar esto en consideración.

Muito bom. Universo cyberpunk na medida. Recomendo, principalmente pelas histórias curtas que dá pra ler do começo ao fim bem rápido.

Ik ben een enorme van van de Ghost in the Shell serie (althans het materiaal voordat Spielberg de franchise overnam) en mijn vriendin heeft ooit eens de originele Manga voor mij in Japan gekocht en meegenomen. Ik bezit ook de Engelse, vertaalde, versie en dat is de versie zoals ik 'm hier beschrijf.Ondanks het feit dat de Kindle niet optimaal is voor het bekijken van grafische afbeeldingen komt dit boek erg goed tot zijn recht. Ik vind het ook sterk dat de Kindle helemaal inspeelt op de Japanse methode van lezen: van "achteren" naar voren (ofwel van rechts naar links). De echte Manga lezen is makkelijker, maar de Kindle versie is beslist een goeie variant.

Ein absoluter Klassiker der Manga- Kunst und des Geschichtenerzählens. Im Prinzip einfach die digitalisierte Auflage des Mangas, wie er seiner Zeit in Amerika herausgegeben wurde. Das bedeutet auch, genauso zensiert, was aber soweit ich weiß nur eine Seite betrifft, die leicht bearbeitet wurde und eine Seite, die fehlt, im Vergleich zum Original-Manga - die Geschichte leider auf jeden Fall nicht darunter.
